Can anyone tell me where I can find information regarding how, what process, the specifications, etc. are used to build a whaler? For instance is there any Balsa coring in a Whaler? How thick is the fiberglass below the waterline. Are Whaler hulls hand laid woven roving? I am very interested in finding more of this type of information and more. What exactly is whaler board? Any information is appreciated. Thanks |

pstroh, I can answer some of your questions. Balsa coring is not used in the construction of Boston Whalers (nor has it ever been as far as I know). Whaler hulls are laid up mostly with chopper gun. Hand laid fiberglass is used in special areas for reinforcement. For more on this subject see: http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/004138.html Whaleboard, (not whaler board) is a phenolic resin board made by Rainier Richlite http://www.richlite.com/whalelite/products.asp that Whaler uses as backing for deck hardware and reinforcement. They started to use Whaleboard in the mid 1990's as a replacement for the plywood they had always used in their hulls up to that point. I should note that Whaler does not use Whaleboard in the transom as reinforcement for the main motor. They still use marine grade plywood for that purpose. Whaleboard should not be confused with Starboard or other similar plastic substitutes for wood trim. |
