Last night I finally recieved a Pate 27 tank for my MT 170 after a three to four week wait. About a week ago I called to be sure that they had gotten my check and everything was on track. The lady I spoke with was very apologetic for the delay and explained that they had been experiencing unseasonably cold weather that had caused havoc with their painting process. Good news was that she had just seen my tank and it was "beautiful" and ready to be shipped that day. Naturally, I inspected the tank fairly carefully as anyone would after paying so much for a tank. Unfortunately the finish had several abrasion marks, a small crack in the paint near the air valve and worst of all, it is covered all over with pock marks. These are like pin (ballpint pen?) dots where the paint didn't flow to cover the glass. Frankly, at this price level I expected a lot more. My question is, has anyone else had a similar experience, and what was the ultimate outcome? Also, they told me the their "creme" color would be the closest match to my hull, and while bad looking (its definately darker) I am wondering whether "white" would have been a closer match. By the way, the tank is otherwise impressive but for the finish.

I have Pate tanks in 2 different boats and have been very happy with them. When ordering, I gave them my hull serial number and the paint matched my gelcoat pretty well. I'm surprised that yours is less than as expected. |

I see that I left out a word in my post; the color is NOT bad looking. Anyhow, when I called Pate the first time I explained to the fellow I spoke with that I had a 2003 MT 170 and they immediately suggested the "creme". Not mention was made of hull serial numbers. I am nevertheless hopeful that a company of Pate's reputation will help me get this all ironed out. I will say, they are very aware that a lot of people hear about them through this forum. |

I have had a 24 gallon Pate tank in my 1994 Montauk since new. I have been very happy with it. I had some buildup of residue in the bottom of the tank a few years back. I removed it and took it down to them and they cleaned it out and made it just like new. No complaints. |

The pock marks you speak of are known as fish eyes. They are caused by poor preparation prior to the paint application. Standard practice is the wash the item down with a good wax/grease remover prior to painting. The long term result may be that the paint starts to peel. I would contact pate and let them know of your dissatisfaction. |

The hull gel coat color on a 170-Montauk looks like "white" to my eye. I would think a "cream" color tank might be a better match for a vintage Montauk with Desert Tan gel coat. |

I got one last year and saw the same cold weather delay. As far as the condition of the tank goes I would call them up and say you are not happy with the condition of the tank and you want a new one. You also got a guarntee with the purchase. For what you paid for it I would send it back and tell them you wanted a new one. The one I got from them was in great shape and has held up very well. Good luck, Denny |

My 1997 montauk has the pate 24 gallon tank and this is my second. The first pate tank developed a very tiny leak on the corner. Pate replaced the tank and its fine ever since. Color is WHITE. My buddies 2003 170 Montauk has also a 24 gallon pate tank. Its white. |

Thanks very much to everyone for all the feedback. I will call Pate tomorrow and report back on the outcome. |

I am happy to report that the folks a Pate were very apologetic for the quality of the tank and poor color match. They immediately placed an order for UPS to come get the tank and said that they would start working on a replacement that will also match the color of the hull. Frankly, I think they were somewhat befuddled as to how a tank could have gone out in the condition I described, but their reaction to set things straight was swift and without hesitation. I am looking forward to getting the real deal soon. |
