I just finished reading the Mercury Outboard catalogue for 2003 cover to cover, trying to figure out why they refer to their warranty as a 2+1 (i.e. 3-year) warranty. There seems to be no explanation.Throughout the booklet, the notation 2+ 1 is used in reference to the warranty. When you get to the last page (specifications table) it says "3-year warranty." Is 2+1 some silly marketing jingle? Or is there some significance to it?

Maybe if no claim is made the first two years, you get a third year of coverage tacked on. This is very much a blind guess, obviously. I'd suggest you get a copy of the actual warranty and read the fine print, but I never read that boring stuff myself, and I'm a damn lawyer, they tell me.Tony |

I haven't read the warranty but I assume it means its a "declining coverage" warrantee. They cover certain things at a predetermined rate for the first 2 years and then coverage changes for the 3rd year. |

It's the corrosion part of the warranty. Since 1989, Mercury has been the only manufacturer offering a three year corrosion warranty. Any damage to the engine resulting from "corrosion" as the primary cause, is covered. So if a head gasket corrodes from saltwater use, and the powerhead blows, the whole rebuild would be covered. |

I bought a 2003 merc. Like larry said, you get 1 year "bumper to bumper", and another 2 years against corrosion. |
