I'm going to go look at a 1971 13' Trophy series Whaler. Anything particular to this model to look out for? What about the stick steering... any comments on that?

thanks

I pulled out my copy of the Whaler CDRom and looked up the Trophy.

The Trophy was the top of the line 13' model in 1970 and 1971, it had dual upholstered swivel seats on a fiberglass frame. The seats are mounted one in front of the other on the centerline, and the steering is from the front seat via an up and down pivoted stick attached to the cable and pully system.

The 1971 Catlogue says that the stick steering made '...the controllability is the best of any 13' Boston Whaler model."

Thanks Taylor. where can I find more information on this boat? For instance, are there 'hard points' to mount a trolling motor and where are they located? What makes it top of the line?

Cabane,

You wouldn't by any chance be looking at Twin Cities Marine in Two Rivers, WI, would you? I looked at that boat a couple times when I stopped in for some parts. It's in fairly good shape, and is a very unusual configuration.. At the time, I thought it to be a little overpriced - and since it's still there over a year later - that may be a fact. You would certainly have a rare model. I didn't check closely to determine the hull integrity, but it appeared okay on cursory inspection. Al might let you test run it since they have their own launch ramps, and if it behaves on the water, it could be a real find... (I still think I'd negotiate the price a little)...

Here's what the 1970 catalogue says:

"Trophy is a 13'3" model primarily for the fresh water bass fisherman, but with added appeals which were never planned. Tandem swivel seats which fold and carry upholstered cushions and backs are solidly mounted to a fiberglass structural frame attached to the hull. Rods or paddles may be stored outboard of the frame rail, which contains bins for securing a small duffle.

"Forward steering with a specially designed stick is a principle feature and makes running the trophy model an unusually pleasurable treat. Up to 40 HP is permitted and the controllability is best of any 13' Boston Whaler model. The skiing set are expected to put Trophies to uses other than fishing!

"The ubiquitous electric trolling motor may be of the modern foot controller style mounted on an optional safety frame (Tolling Motor Support Rail Kit see price page 16) shown in the photo page 3. This not only holds the motor but protects the operator from the motor in a collision and gives leaning security shown he stand. Another attachment for use of tiller operated electric motors will be available."

The 1971 catalogue changes the last paragraph to read simply:

"A troller motor bracket is available to fit the bow and side of all 13' whalers."

The picture on page 3 is tantalizing in the details that don't really show up. It appears that there is some sort of bracket at the very bow, and something running back to a transversely mounted loop or rail just behind the forward hatch, which comes to up to the mid thigh level of the fisherman standing next to it.

Note... you to can be a whaler expert of sorts. Check the link to the Whaler CDROM catalogue collection for sale by Forum member Tom W Clark. It’s really great. This is an unsolicited testimonial.

OK. I twisted off and bought this unit Friday. Check out a few images I took this morning. What is the going price for one of these babies? I don't want a case of buyer's remorse! ... so be honest. The boat is really solid. Skred, I bought this in Oklahoma City. There is alot of cracks here and there. Maybe advanced crazing? Dunno. Has some epoxy patching here and there. It has a Evinrude 40 and looks to be the original motor. The steering cable has broke but doesn't look like a big deal to replace. I have many fundemental questions. For instance, to you haul the boat with the engine up or down? There seems to be plenty of clearance in the down position. I think there would be less stress on the transom in the down position. Well that's enough for now. Check out the images and tell me what you think of my Classic!

Engine is a 1972. In that condition I hope you paid less than $2500. The rarity might make it worth more but how much I don't know. If i was buying I would have wanted to get that for about $1500.

Wow Bigshot, you nailed it. Price that is. I gave 1500. I thought it was a decent deal. I got robbed in the eyes of all my buddies.I get the Glasstron this and yadda yadda that.

Title on the motor says 1971. I'll have to get the serial number and look it up.
