...with me at the helm, that is. Nice break between serious Spring storms here in Sonoma County (60 mi north of San Francisco)...60 degrees, 6-8 ft westerly swell, light northwesterly breeze, no whitecaps, sun and beautiful towering cloud structure. Trolled a watermelon Apex 25 pulls down, 2 1/2 miles NW off Bodega Head, in 200 feet of water...Bingo! Nice 31" 15 pounder after about half an hour...then nothing for another hour and a half, when I had to head back to pick up my girl at school (what a waste of valuable fishing time...). You guys would have gotten a kick seeing me fumbling with the net and my rod, banging the poor fish on the head with the net three or four times trying my damndest to knock it off my line...first time with my new/old/wonderful Katama alone with a fish on.

This was also my first time trolling for real with my little Yami four stroke...silent, smoke-free and deadly. There were about 30 boats fishing this area -- notwithstanding the bad weather reports -- this third day of salmon season. Spoke another Whaler, a 1985 Outrage 18, and we fished together for a while. Guy told me he bought his boat in Dana Point (50 mi south of L.A.) new with the Yami, and has had no trouble with either for the past 18 years. Beautiful craft.

Salmon fillets have been marinating in a Hawaiian teriyaki sauce for the last hour...now into the oven and then into my family's mouths. Best regards to all of you; wish you coulda been there, but it would have been a little crowded.

Tony,

Sometimes you just never know about Bodega Bay, even with the worst of reports we have arrived to almost pristine conditions. Great to hear about the fish, sounds like they are around. I've been looking up at the smoker wondering when it will get going as I've got some great zinfandel staves waiting to flavor the first batch.

Hey George,

It was very nice out there. I didn't get on the water 'til 10:30, and only fished for a couple of hours. Folks who stayed out longer were almost all getting limits.
This good this early in the season augers well for June and July...maybe like last year, let's hope. Water had that nice brick brownish color, and the fish were feeding on tiny baitfish and crab larvae...Dave on the Blockbuster said there were krill too.

You have no idea how important this day was for me. I bought my Whaler back in October '02, and worked on her all through the Winter. I repowered last month and had 36 hours on my new motor when I left the dock today. LooLee3's my first motor craft (I've sailed my whole life), and I'm absolutely amazed at what I've been missing.
I've fished these waters for the past 13 years, always in a friend's boat. This is a whole different experience, and the satisfaction of landing my first salmon alone on my Katama has me glowing. Tasted pretty good, too.

Anyway, neighbor...any time. I can usually get away during the week with a week's leadtime, so drop me an email and we can take one boat or two. If you're going to be out this weekend, I'll be on 9 or 77.

Tony
