I bought a 81 Newport, the prev owner installed Walmart style blue fishing seats in the front. My wife and I picked up some marine grade vinyl today she is going to recover the RPS. I would like to make stock looking front seats and am not sure what they look like. Anyone have any pics of what they should look like. Also would like to hear how other Newport owners installed rod holders. Feel free to post or email any pics you may have. Thanks Sean@capital.net |

You can get a better look at Newports by going to the Cetecea section of the sit. There are several nice pics there, one of which is: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/cetaceaPage03.html Good luck with the boat, I'm sure you will get many years of enjoyment out of it. DaveS |

I just remembered there was a page dedicated to a Newport: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/cetaceaPage66.html Really nice setup and good pics to go along with it. Hope this helps. DaveS |

I have a different setup that I believe is better than the buckets, I will shoot you a pic. |

Another idea: http://bellsouthpwp.net/j/s/jstachow/Homepa/Homepa6/stack6.htm My 1979 Newport has these Mahogany bench seats. I cannot find this as an option, but it had to be since they are well made and bolted (with no other bolt holes where seats would have been attached) to the console. Anyway, with this set up I just put outdoor lawn chair cushions tied to the slats. |

Nice job on the refit. 2 ideas for FYI: On the transom where you see the old clamp marks, buy a transom saver to cover them up. Basically it is a 1/2" thick by 2.5" high piece of aluminum that connects both of your engine bolts, should cover those marks and is like $20. You can also have them engraved to say your boat name or Boston Whaler etc. 2nd, the reason your boat sits lower than mine is your casting deck. My drain holes are just at water level so I get some growth in the pockets, they are not under water. Try a 30lb bag of lead shot in the front well, should lift the stern at rest. |

Hey Bigs, I had one of those aluminum plates put on my NewTauk. Should the mechanic used aluminum bolts as well rather than SS? Boat is still at the shop rigging my 75hp Merc. |

Only if ya don't want to keep that engine for long. Alum is too week for any kind of bolts. |

On my Newport the plastic and seats were gone from in front of the console. after using a cooler for a while, I got two Attwood Centric saltwater seats, put them on pin bases, made a little seat platform for them from an old teak swim platform and shower seat base.(Base is almost like a short table.) Now I can pull the seats and use them as bass-boat type fishing seats on pedestals front and rear. Looks stock, but works better for me. |
