Whats the purpose of the square, recessed area on a 13's transom (port side)? An area to mount a small kicker motor (which does not make sense on a 13)? Thank you.

I can e-mail a photo if needed.

Yep. Marlo. That's what it is for.

Whether it makes sense or not depends on your intended use of the boat.

A kicker is realy a troling motor.

It is for a transom mount trolling motor. Eiter gas or electric.

Now you speed/horsepower demons could mount a 40 on the trnasom as a main motor and mount a 15 as a "trolling motor". I wonder if that would work?

So 40 +15 = 55 horsepower, correct? Great! Actually, maybe I will think about putting some sort of swim step/rail there to get my fat a$$ out of the water. I dont have a wood/embed diagram, but I would imagine there is strong enough material there.

I have a '93 GLS that we use on the river. My wife likes to idle along with a glass of wine and a snack and watch the sun go down. If we do this with the 40HP Yamaha at idle it coughs, burps and smells ('93 motor - pre EFI). I stick the 3.3 off the BW Harpoon on the back and we can go for miles on a quart of gas. The 40 HP acts as a rudder very well. Try it!

I was always under the impression that the indentation on early 13s was a handle, to lift and carry the hull.
