There are some adult playthings, notably boats and airplanes, that can be considered as Tools, Toys, or Investments. In the best of circumstances, the plaything can be all three.

It is a tool if it helps you in your livelyhood; Toy if it helps you relax; and Investment if it appreciates through time.

There are a number of things can come into consideration when looking at an aquisition. Tools can be depreciated and the interest and operational expense deducted. Furthermore, we all know about the Toy aspect of the Whaler.

The most interesting part is the Investment aspect. The nontangible part of the investment is the feeling of security you get knowing about the strenght and Un-sinkablity of the hull.

In thinking about the hull alone (not the motor, since it will always decline in value), I would expect the hull to decline in value for "Several" years, and then turn the corner and begin to appreciate.

Does anyone know how long it takes the hull value to begin to trend back up? I expect a number of about 8 years, but I frankly have no idea.
