I just bought a whaler. best that I can tell , it is a nauset, although the wood is long gone and replaced by a decent fiberglass seat and console. I was told that it was a 16, but I don't see any evidencve that they made a 16, therfore I am assuming a 17. I am told that it is a 1963. I will pick it up hopefully tomorrow as my new engine is being installed ( 96 Ev 48) I can't spend a whole lot of money as this is a second love for me ( I own a 34 foot sailboat ) Luckily, my wife amazingly loves the beat up looking old whaler! ( she has " project vision, although this has taken 11 years to develop). Can anyone tell me some things about the nauset? It has rear rails that I was told were not stock, but I hav seen pics of nausets with them. It also has the front rails. Has anyone tried to reconstruct the wood pieces using the plans available online? Is there a cheaper place to buy replaements other than the place mentioned in the forum ( 980.00 for the console) I plan to paint is with brightside next weekend and repaint the bottom. I'm not sure how far I want to go with " total " restoration as I also have 3 kids , and once you start feeding them, they kids of get used to it. I would appreciate any input. No , I don't haev the time to search the forum for 2 years.

Chrisbo,

You can find an excellent answer to your question here on this site in the reference section:

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/16-17/

The only difference between the 16' hull and the 17 ' hull is the name.. In 1976 they changed the name from the 16' to the 17'...

There all also plenty of photos of the Nauset in the Cetacea section here on this site:

Good Luck with your project...
