Our local rag runs a column by John Adams on Northern California fishing every Thursday. Thought I'd share some of today's information, especially because a Whaler rendezvous is planned for this coming weekend in the Sacramento River delta. Adams says striper action is strong on the river near Colusa (flys, guys), and salmon are showing up too, further down. Folks are having striper, salmon and halibut success drifting shiners, too, down closer to the Bay, according to Adams. Sturgeon fishing is slow. I've never fished that neck of the woods...but it sounds good. Certainly better than salmon out of Bodega Bay this past week, where the water temperature has dropped below fifty degrees and the fish aren't schooling yet. Wish I could make the rendezvous, but I'm deckhanding Saturday and cooking a family brunch Sunday (hopefully centering around the mighty Chinook). Have a great time, all you Whalers. Tony |

Hey Tony, you sure you guys are going to be deckhanding this weekend? NOAA is calling for a mighty blow. Might not be a bad idea about the Rendezvous, at least as a day trip. |

Does anyone know off hand if and where salmon are in season on the Delta? I was planning to target stripers and largemouth at the Rendezvous, and hadn't even thought about salmon. |

Thanks for that, damnit! Isn't that a major S.O.B....we've (I've) been blown out day after day over the past couple of weeks...I thought it was over for a while, especially this weekend. I didn't mention it here, but I've already arranged to take tomorrow off also. Thanks a lot for spoiling my day, ST and Triblet (especially loved your caps, Chuck). Oh well, it's a long season. Maybe I will make it up to the rendezvous, but I'll probably stay home and weep. Tony PS, Thanks! |

andygere, I've never fished the Delta...at least not in the past 35 years. I know the salmon season is open in the Bay, but where the Bay becomes the Delta, and whether the rules change there, I can't say. Anyway, you might have a great time with the stripers, at least according to John Adams, who has been reliable in the past. His article is in today's (Thurs) Press Democrat sports section, maybe online...Have a great time at the rendezvous. Tony |

Is it just me or did it seem like there were a lot of lousy days last year as well. Usually the months of September and October are gorgeous off our coast but last year wasn’t that good. This year, winter has lasted until this week and the forecast obviously isn’t shaping up too good for next weekend. I hope this isn’t a new trend. As far as fishing goes, ‘fishsniffer.com’ has a pretty good handle on the NorCal fishing scene. The few times I have followed their advice I actually did well. |

elaelap: They aren't my caps, they are NOAA's. Dunno why, but they post forecasts in caps. What I posted was from http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/data/Forecasts/FZUS56.KMTR.html Sal, details on the Rendezvous are in the Trips

Sal, We're meeting up near Rio Vista at Snug Harbor. Check with Jim Hooper who's out and about on this site for the details. Most are coming up Fri night. I'll be coming across from San Rafael on Sat morning (hope we get some smooth water crossing San Pablo and into the Carquinez). |

Hey Tony, don't feel bad about the wind, it only blows on the weekends! ;) On the way home from the river last week, I took the long way home through Bodega, and messed around a bit for perch on the pier (Spud Pt.) At about 7:30 pm, I noticed fish starting to bust the surface. I ran to the car, got the fly rod, and cast a shad jig for a bit. Had several hits, and hooked one, it was a sardine, but big, about 10" or 11". Fought fine on a fly rod. The shad flies are a bit too big though, and had nothing else that was brite. That was like fishing for Micro-Tarpon, I guess. Oh, then a seal showed up and they were gone. Oh, well. |

PRM, theres a minus tide this weekend which flows directly against the wind. It's gonna be a SOB all the way up, even going with the wind, lots of 4 - 6 ft crap to just keep you off plane. It's howelling right now & has been all week. Yesterday afternoon it gusted over 50 mph. I have to do some work on my island, it's located at the very East end of Montezuma slough, just west of Chain Island as you pass light 33, big 2 story house with 100 ft dock, called "Spinner Island". If I get the chance, i'll run up to Rio Vista, it's only about 8 or 10 miles. Sal |

Sal, prm1177 made it no sweat. Now, getting home today may have been "interesting". We'll see. And yes, it blew some yesterday, and blew real

Trib, yesterday was the biggest ebb [ minus tide ] of the year, today was a minus -1.7 running straight into that 20 kt wind. Unless he waited till it started to flood, about 2:30 3:00:pm , he got his butt kicked. I was going to run to the island this morn, it was howelling with solid 5 & 6 footers real close & all white on top. Planted the rest of my garden instead. Sal |

We met up with him a couple of miles south of Rio Vista about 3 p.m. And he didn't look one bit like he'd got his butt kicked. Where are you measuring the tides? I want to

This afternoon we cruised with Caddis from Snug Harbor to Frank's Tract and Bethel Island for lunch, and while it was windy, conditions were not all that bad. Late afternoon currents in Steamboat Slough did make it a little more interesting at the ramp, but no big deal. |

The low tide at the Golden Gate was about 8:00: AM on Sunday, Pittsburg is 4-1/2 hours later, & Rio Vista is close to 1-1/2 hours later then Pittsburg & when it'sd a big minus, the current runs another hour longer, putting outgoing current till about 3:PM at Rio Vista. If he ran all the way back to San Rafeal before 3:PM, it was kicking real good, but if he stayed in the sloughs around Franks Tract your protected . The water gets bad from Honker Bay down river because it's wide open during a NW wind. Sal |

We ran under the Rio Vista Bridge on our way back around 3p.m. and it wasn't bad at all. The water was pretty low by then so I imagine most of the tidal flow was about done. It seemed like there was much more wind through that area in the morning. |

Trib, I posted the tide was low at 8:AM at the gg bridge, Pittsburg is 4-1/2 hours later [ 12:30PM ], [ but the current runs sometimes 1-1/2 hours after the tide is ebbed max, Rio Vista is 1-1/2 hours later then Pittsburg [ 2:PM ] & the outgoing current on a minus tide runs minimum 1-1/2 hours longer [3:30PM ].
