I need to get a mooring cover for my 17' Montauk. I need the type that fits tight around the boat without sagging. Can someone recommend brand?

Hi, Mark.

Mills was the OEM for Boston Whaler canvas for many years and is still the best.

You can find a link by searching the OEMs Forum.

I don't know what it is with Mills!!!/? But if one would like a nice cover for an affordable price, one must take it to a professionl canvas shop, have it done right and tight and then you will have no problems.

Sunbrella for example, it has to be fit screaming tight and the it will stretch out (about 3% expansion factor in Sunbrella). Thats how we do our tops and they come out beautiful.

To the guys who repsonded about the Overton's Sundura cover: do you use it for mooring or trailering? I am concerned about mooring. The boat goes in next week till November

Ok, now picture this and see what you'll be payin' for. A Mills mooring cover will fit your particular rig like a spandex leotard on Jennifer Lopez's backside. Any other brand cover will at best fit like a two-sizes-too-large pair o'Sears briefs on yer li'l brother, or at woist a pair of Depends on Gramma. So count your coins and take your pick.

Sorry Bugs, but that's the whole trut':-!

Taylor Made has covers designed specifically for Montauks. Has anyone had experience with these?

Hi hoots!
I like your analogies. Those are funny! I just believe that it is good to have a canvas shop make one (like I did) and it fits the boat to a T. Its a custom fit that looks proportionate to the boat. Bye Hoots!

Mark:

I purchased a custom fit cover from Overtons for my Montauk (Sundura) fits like a glove and I also use it for trailering.

I know Miller does a beautiful cover but 850 vs 260 is quite a difference and belive me the Sundura looks like a custom job. I had one on my 15 and after 4 yrs it still looked new.

Good luck,

Fred

I like the stuff from Mills, I just got a Suntop and I'm very haooy with that. But at a potential savings of 400-500.00. I think this Sundura is worth a look.

If you go the custom canvas route, and get equivalent quality, it will cost you every bit as much as a Mills. The advantage of the Mills is that it is a proven design, refined over the years. I had a very nice custom cover made for my Outrage 22 Cuddy since Mills didn't offer one, and it has a T-top. I paid Mills type dollars, and have a high quality cover that I'm pleased with. I have however, needed to have a few "adjustments" made (at no charge) to get it just right.

Hey Fred good to hear from you again. (I bought a trim motor off of you a few years ago.) Thanks for responding. I'm glad you like the Overton's canvas. That s most likely the way I'll go.

The overton cover fits perfect. It is made for a montauk. I use it for both mooring and transport.I use bunge cords instead of the hull tiedowns for transport.

As I stated in a topic in the "post classic" section. I have a 2003 Montauk. Mills wants $720 plus shipping; Boatcoversdirect.com wants $388 which includes shipping. For $400 I can put up with a little "looseness". It is also made of Sunbrella and warrantied for 5 years. We'll see how comparable it is..Jim
