I am considering adding a poling platform to my 80' 17 montauk. Does anyone have any input? Is this worth doing? If so where might I find one. Thanks

I saw a polling platform on a Montauk at, of all places, the Whaler factory in Edgewater, FL. (See Cetacea for a photo-essay) This was some years ago. I did not take a photo of the Montauk with the polling platform, but I did note it. Whaler keeps a number of boats for employee use, and this was one of them. Unfortunately, I can't provide more details than this.

Best regards,
Jim

jstachowiak have you had any experience with this platform. It looks like it is very thin.

Has anyone had experience with these platforms?

Thanks,
Palmetto

If a swim platform is a problem mounting to your BW transom, how would you mount one of those?

I am familiar with the seamount-mattson poling platforms. I have used Mattson for custom aluminum tanks on two boat restoration projects. I have seen their platforms in person and they appear to be well built (as are their tanks), but I don't have first hand knowledge of anyone who owns one. The models they have at their facility are more impressive looking (and possibly more expensive) than the basic ones they show on the website. You can get a nicer fiberglass platform surface, and the aluminum tubing can be powder coated any color you like (the black ones look nice, but may look odd on a whaler).

They are nice, honest people...give them a call & they'll give you a better feel for their products.

I bought a 96 standard 17 which had a poling platform mounted on the transom. There were two channel shaped brackets (with two bolts each) mounted on either side of the engine. The two poles supporting the platform fitted into the brackets, so that you could use the boat without the platform. It seemed very sturdy, but I had no need for it and sold it on this site a couple of years ago. David

The boat was a 15 Sport at the Whaler Plant that had a poling platform on it. It looked awesome. It was fabricated by Sunshine Welding/Merritt Island, FL 321-784-4838. It is not item setting on a shelf. They are custom made. I am in the process of having my boat brought there to make one for my 1987 15 Sport. It mounts no problem and would fit a 17 just as well. As they both have the same type of splashwells, good luck !

I have a polling platform on my 13 Ft. Sport.
It works great. Of course with the 13 it's nice to have someone on the front of the boat when fishing to counter balance the boat. I weigh 160 and alone on clam water no water comes into the splash well when I am on top. It also makes for a great fishing seat too.
