I have a brand new 170 Montauk with 90HP-4 stroke (4 hours use)...My problem is the boat stays in the water for the season, so I keep the engine tilted up. I am told that sometimes gas will run out and the carb floats aren't seated when not using the boat. This is letting the floats get sticky. Does this sound reasonable? What should I do to remedy this...I am not a mechanic, but do know a bit about engines, carbs, etc. Boat is too far to take back to dealer...can/should I fix this myself with Gumout, carb cleaner, etc.?
Thanks for any advice here...

I don't leave mine in the water (trailer queen), but I do need to tilt the motor (85 hp Bearcat four stroke)to trailer it... I always disconnect the fuel coupler (at the motor) and run the motor until it runs the carbs out of gas... This way has proven to prevent fuel leaking (when tilted) and releaves the excess pressure on the needle and seat that can build up from temp changes while in tilted position... Give it a try and see if it helps your situation... Of coarse you will need to prime the carbs (squeeze bulb) each time after doing the above...

Ed Z, thanks for much for the advice...I sense that I am not alone in having this problem. I will follow this advice in the future...but I am left with a boat that won't go...any advice for a layman as to how to 'unstick' those carbs to get things moving? I am not a trailer guy and can't haul the Merc over to a dealer...anything I can do myself, like squirting Gumout into the fuel overflow off the carbs? Thanks so much!

Powertune. Mercury puts it out. Spray into overflow hole. Tap the bowl LIGHTLY with the end of a medium size plastic screwdriver handle. If they are really gummed you may have to repeat proceedure a few times or let sit overnight. Steve

I understand that running an oil injection 2 stroke out of gas when you shut down, will fill the engine with straight oil. The oil will keep feeding, even as the gas runs out.

That would make it really hard/impossible to start the next time out.

This same article was posted to several other topic areas on the forum. I consider it extremely bad form to post the same article to multiple forums and I encourage author drewc to avoid this practice in the future.

I am into my second summer with our 170 and 90 4 stroke. It is kept in the water and I always leave the motor tilted to avoid zebra mussels colonizing it.

No problems whatsoever with leaks or engine performance. I don't use the mechanical lock, which perhaps I should.

For what its worth I got it up to 41.5 mph, on the cheap non-stainless prop, measured with my Garmin. I am very pleased with the boat and motor.
