Yesterday was one of the nicest days we've had in weeks so I got my five year-old son up early, fired up the my Outrage and took him to see the sun rise on the Potomac and the tall ships in Alexandria before they sailed.

As he admired the ships, I admired him and congratulated myself on the purchase of my old Whaler last year. It was the best money I have spent in years. I had always heard about Whalers and their exemplary safety record, but having my kids on it gives me a new appreciation.

Being a relative newbie I have also learned a great deal about Whalers and boating in general from this forum...much appreciated.
Regards,
Jay

I'll bet that's a memory that stays with your boy as long as he lives.

I can appreciate how you felt. Last year, after converting my Newport to a Newtauk, I decided to take my 13 year old son down the the river for our maiden voyage. After about 5 minutes of sitting still and being patient, he suddenly asks if he could drive! The next 30 minutes consisted of him just having fun. Part 2 was this spring when I took both my 14 and 6 year old out on my first trip of the year and the 6 year old says, " I want to drive"...spent the next 15 minutes doing donuts at about 5 mph...the look on his face said it all!

Enjoy...they're only young once!

I do not know who has the biggest smile when my 6 year old is at the helm, him or me. He loves whalers as much as I do and often points out other whalers for us to admire together.
