Fishing on the Chesapeake Bay. (91' 25 Outrage,whalerdrive/cuddy)

The prized and much sought after stripers (striped bass, aka, Rockfish)have been flooding the Bay since early April. The fishing here has been phenominal this year. My friends and I have caught countless fish measuring from 10" to 40". Surprisingly, the 40" along with a 36" did fit in the transom fishbox!

Today We went from the South River across the bay to the "hill".(6.5 miles)The water was flat calm and a haze was on the horizon. The twin engines were synchronized and running perfectly. Cruising along enjoying the view, and smell of the salt air. We arrived and anchored amongst 20 other boats all hovering on the hill. I threw over the chum bag, and in 5 minutes we had fish! We caught several fish in the first hour. Mostly small ones, 13"-18". We decided to catch and release, unless we caught a huge one of course. The ride back was just as nice.

I love being on the water, particularly in my Whaler. I've put 40 hours on this boat/engines since April, and in all conditions. The 25' whaler handles and rides great. Its really a kind of therapy for me...

Good to hear how you are enjoying your whaler on the bay with the good fishing. I went last year one time, Not much luck, but after hearing your fishing report I think I may try going back up to your fishing area from NC with my 19 Revenge. Any suggestions on fishing areas?

Arrrghhhh, that 'fishbox.'

On Sunday, I put a 'barely-fits' 40 inch halibut in that damn thing ( I should know better) and the fish broke that PVC cross-over pipe from the starboard well to the port, AGAIN. I've fixed the thing twice.

What am I gonna do when I break the 45 inch mark?

Glad you're having fun.

John, try where the Brewerton Channel makes its turn from the bay toward Baltimore Harbor. That area there, around the mouth of the Patapsco River, is one of the hotspots for large Rock. Also, the Gas Docks down around Calvert Cliffs are good but you can't get with 500 feet of them now. Take a look a the number 2 bouy just west of James Island near the mouth of the little Choptank River. The bay is full of dropoffs near that bouy. Its a good place to troll.

John,

The fish are very small now that the larger fish have moved out, I've heard the area north of the bay bridge/love point area is producing. The bay bridge tunnel is also a good area. Its also abit closer to NC.

I'm preparing my 25'Outrage for offshore action beginning mid July. I had a local canvas shop construct a large insulated "Tuna bag" out of some materials I picked up at Home depot. In case my transom box, isn't large enough...

Homey, thanks for the fishing info, You are right I think it would be a little close to NC to fish there. Good luck on your fishing. I did not realize the bigger fish had already move out.
