I am looking at a 1984 22ft. Boston Whaler Outrage without power, on a trailer, that has been sitting for a couple of years.

I checked it out and the hull appears to be in pretty good condition with no stress cracks or damage.

The bottom has never been painted. There are no electronics or instruments, but the hull looks to be in very good condition, as well as the trailer.

I was wondering if anyone might have an idea about its value .

Thanks,
Mike

To collect opinions on value from people who have not seen the particular boat your are asking about, I recommend reposting this article in the MARKETPLACE forum.

Also, you can search for previous postings in the MARKETPLACE for boats similar to yours and what they sold for.

You can also gauge the market by searching the many online listings, such as

www.boattraderonline.com

The value of any used classic Boston Whaler boat depends almost entirely on its condition, the presence of desireable factory options, and lack of hack modifications by previous owners.

For example, if the boat you are looking at has the following factory options

--bow pulpit extension and railing
--Whaler Drive
--Reversible Pilot Seat
--Teak gunwales
--Hydraulic Steering

it would be worth $5,000 to $6,000 more than a boat that did not.

If the boat you are looking at has some hacked up T-Top installed in a poor manner without proper reinforcement, then it could easily be worth $1,000 less than a boat in original condition.

If the boat you are looking at has been stored indoors and has little or no oxidation and checking of the gel coat, it would easily be worth several thousand dollars more than a boat left to parch in the sun for decades.

If the boat you are looking at has very little modification from original condition it will be worth more than a boat in which the previously owners have drilled, installed, and wired all sorts of now-obsolete electronics or left the mounting holes behind from such installations.

So in just a few areas it is possible to see that the value of the boat could swing over a range of $8,000 or more.

Again, the MARKETPLACE forum is the best place to solicit opinions and appraisals of particular boats.

My favorite appraisal (sight unseen) was by a fellow who said that a boat being offered for almost $30,000 was only worth $ 8,000, a price at which he had recently purchased one. Of course, the buyer at $8,000 would not sell at that price, no way! I believe the other boat ultimately sold for close to the asking price; it was a very desireable model, in excellent condition, and one of last years of production for that particular model.

So there you see a $20,000 swing in value for what might be considered the same boat.

Jimh, very informative, thanks for the reply. I understand what you are saying about the swing in values. I'll follow your recommendations and check the marketplace, etc..
Thanks again, Mike
