Like probably several thousand other people reading the postings here I have been searching high and low for a perfect fixer upper, reasonably priced Montauk. Recently I came across a '95 17 Outrage, which I guess is not the "Generation II" hull, that definitely has some potential to be brought back to life, and is reasonably priced I think ($10K). Question for anyone who would be willing to offer their thoughts: Is this a desirable boat, that I will be able to use for a few years, and then sell easily, like a Montauk, or is this boat considered a white elephant because of it's short history?

In mah opinion, that's a great hull, just a shorter version of the popular Outrage 18'6" hull. Much softer ride than the Montauk and other smaller hulls due t'the deeper V entry. Also has an on-board fuel tank and some built-in goodies (like a live-well, aft corner seats) that are nice. It wasn't made for very many years, so the Outrage 17' is a little rare, but you should have no trouble finding a buyer when the time comes. $10 grand is a very good price if the hull hasn't been abused and the engine's still got good compression. Maybe a grand or two high for the Gulf Coast market if it needs an immediate re-power. Good luck. |

I have the '94 version of that boat and love it. Like hooter said, it's just a shorter (and lighter) version of the 18'6" outrage. |

There is a guy on another forum that says he has that exact hull 17 foot outrage 1996 and had it crack on him. He sent it back to whaler and deemed it unrepairable and only giving him a the book value of the hull. This is from an unchecked source but it sounded truthful. Other than that, I have heard only good things about these hulls. |

I agree with Sah-well monster! I owned a 1995 17' Outrage for three years. Great looking, nice curves, reel head turner, unbeleivable performer ok ok ok. Seriously though . I have had friends who owned boats up to 4 and 5 feet longer tell me that my 17 handled a chop better than their own boats. I was biased but I beleived it too. The drawback for me was the interior space for fishing. Tight with 3 and downright uncomfortable with 4 people. This may be obvious to you but when I bought and sold, the price was more than a Montauk and less than a 19 Outrage of similar vintage/condition. It took a while for a buyer to find her but when it happened I got what I asked for her. Hope that helps. |

1996 17' Outrage was a different hull than the 1990-95.-WS |

Is this a contant problem with the 1996+ 17 outrages or an isolated case, What do you think? |

For what its worth, I too have a 17 Ft Outrage mine is a 1992 with a 115 Johnson. I baught it in December and began using it April 10th. So far I can not find a fault with it. I have taken freinds out on it who have bigger non-Whalers and they cant belive how smooth she runs in the chop/swells. I did suffer a bit of the 2 footer problem when I saw a 20 Ft Outrage for sale. Lucky for my wallet it sold before I got back to it. Hope all goes well for you... Brendan |
