Author Topic:   Determining Year of 13'

I am looking at a 13' whaler for a winter project and am trying to determine the year. The owner says it is in the 80's, but it has no smirk. In researching this site I found that the smirk started around 71 and the interior changed to desert tan in 72. The boat has been painted inside (blue)and out (white) so the hull id number is covered. I think I am looking at a pre 70 sport, are there any other characteristics to look for in determining the year?

Bulkhead transom(with 2 norman pins) or the modern one like in a 17'?

Transom height 15" 1958-1972, 20" 1972 and after. Same with smirk (no smirk till 1972), and blue interior(until 1972).

It had the bulkhead transom, can't remember but I think it had norman pins. Also had the same type cable and pulley steering that broke and ejected me back in the 60's.

What year is on the title? Not always correct but a good place to start. No title? .....Run Forrest run.

Brian,

In the state of Ohio, no title for boats under 14'. I think this is very common in many states.

All you need in NYS for a boat less than 14' is a bill of sale and a transferable registration. The boat is in the front yard of a friend of the owners brother. The owner is in Florida. They are looking for the registration, but nobody can remember who had it last. There may be cause for concern here.

No Smirk. Transom Bulkhead? No way is that a 1980's boat.
Try 1960's.

You are correct, just spoke with the owner and he confirmed it is a mid 60's. Now to see if it is a good deal, I have to figure out what I could get for the Johnson 9.9 electric start that's on it. Any ideas?

Jay, no title states are the exception rather than the norm especially for powerboats. At any rate when buying a boat make sure you can show a proper chain of ownership or you are asking for trouble. In your first post you state "the owner says it is in the 80's" and then in the last one you further state "owner confirms it is a mid 60"s". This may be an honest oversight or gross misrepresentation. All the more reason to make sure the seller is the rightful owner of this boat. A transferable registration is usually one that is current if this boat has been suitting for some time my guess is the registration has expired.

Whats a 9.9hp worth? Once again depends on the year/condition. Put it on Ebay at no reserve if you would like to find out exactly what "market value" is.

Regards

Brian
