Hi anybody else working on rstoring a classic whaler in southern Illinois? I'm restoring a 71 Nauset and would like to compare notes with others in the area (or further away) with similar projects.

So far I've gotten a new trailer, re-powered from my old 1971 100 Evinrude to a 1990 88 johnson and am currently working on rewiring and removing the old brown paint a previous owner put on it.

I redid a Nauset in the winter of 2000-01. It was listed as being built between 65-68. Numbers were gone but the dealer used what info he had to get that date for me. Anyway it was stripped and had been owned by the Army COE for awhile. I did photos on it and posed on my web site if you want to see the steps I went through. I paid $2500 for the hull, $400 for a used trailer which I replaced last year with a new one and put a new 50 HP 2 stroke Merc on it at the beginning of 2001.My cost for doing the mahogany console and seats was about $600 total. Last spring I redid the blue interior with blue interlux epoxy paint to get it back to the correct Whaler color. My site is :

Not Southern Illinois but East Central Illinois... 84 15' that needs a tad of work (I've owned her since college at UI). Have redone the wood numerous times. Need to do some glass and gel work (hopefully this winter). Motor is another issue... When I find time to complete a compression test I'll have a good feel which direction I need to go.

Bothedog:

Thanks for your reply its good to know about your similar interests nearby. I'm slowly removing the coat of brown paint on my Nauset and finding scratches and dings, nothing major so far but will have to learn how to repair damage to fiberglass. Also have a new used motor without a tach so I need to get a tach for the 1990 88 hp Jophnson, maybe Ebay?
Do you ever fish Lake Michigan? Had a great trip there last month with a guide and my goal is to get my whaler into good enough shape to occassionally get out for salmon.

RWest:

Why did you have to redo the interior blue? Mine is in pretty serviceable shape although it does have some damage to it. Did the UV get to it?

I appreciate your numbers. I paid $3,000 for the boat, motor and trailer in 1986 and put another thousand into a trolling motor and electronics for bass and saltwater fishing. I fished it for about ten years in Alabama with it and then moved up here into southern Illinois last year.

I got some time off and decided to rennovate my Nauset. Started in late July and I've invested $725 in a galvanized trailer (as my old one had been ruined by the saltwater) and $1500 in a 1990 88 hp Johnson (my 1971 Evinrude was getting too old). My trolling motor still seems alright but my auxillary motor mount seems to be on it's last legs (I've been watching a mount on Ebay) My next major purchase will probably be to upgrade my kicker. I've got an old 5.5 hp Evinrude that will do in a pinch and a 15 hp Evinrude that I don't like to lift as it weighs almost 95 pounds.

Hopefully my VHF and Loran are still working but I'll probably need to invest in a GPS.

That's about it for plans for my Nauset.
