Dear Whaler Enthusiasts,

We have an 84 Montauk that has some stress cracks, one very small small soft spot on the deck, but otherwise is in great condition. Absolutely no cracking or blistering on the outside of the hull. The boat is powered by a Johnson 90, runs extremely well, and is primarily used on Lake Erie, only in good weather.

The new Montauks are approx $23,000 (90 Merc and a trailer) and our question is are they worth the price? Do they ride significantly smoother in a 3-4 foot wave than the boat we currently own? They do not appear to be as sturdy as the older Whalers, but only speculation on our part, having never ridden in a new one. The rails and cletes just look less robust than the older Whalers.

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Nushlie

Hi Nushlie and welcome. I'll try to answer some of your questions. As to ride - I've ridden in both the old and the new. There is no question - the new is better, much better. As to price, admittedly mine is a 2003 and prices have gone up a bit but I paid closer to 19K with all the options I wanted.

The cleats on the bow are 8 inches, anything larger would be overkill. The 2004's have stern cleats also. I don't know what you are basing your premise on that the new don't "appear" as sturdy as the old; all I can say is - time will tell.

As for the ride...

Yes, it is much better than the old hull, but remember, this is still a 2000# 17 foot hull. You are going to get bounced around a bit. The deeper V does cut the waves better.

The extra beam also improves the stability.

I just upgraded from a '64 to the '03.

i agree with maximus. it's still a 17 ft boat and even if it were a 27 ft boat, the big water is much bigger. if it's a whaler, feel safer. just run it as conditions allow. seldom can any boat run full throttle safely on the open sea. mine is a 98 montauk. no teak but still the old cathedral hull and i love her. probably a little rougher ride than the new ones but i don't care. i know how she handles under various circumstances and i know i can depend on her. if i weren't married already i'd marry her.

Whaler Enthusiasts:

Are there any significant differences between the 2003 and 2004 Montauks other than a higher price for the 2004?
