Hey whalers, Killinger Marine down here in Pensacola sold out to Marine Max. Thought you would want to know. My 170 Montauk maybe the last Whaler sold by them. We will see. Jeff |

Although I had limited dealings with them I do hate to see them go. Afraid this is more of the trend for small, customer oriented, companies to go by the way. I would think that Brunswick would be concerned too. Sea Island Marine in Beaufort SC and Lockwood Marine in Darien GA are the only true Whaler dealers in our area now. I won't count SeaRay of Savannah, name says it all. Jim Armstrong |

They had a tent sale a couple of weeks ago. You could get a great deal on engine cowlings (if you needed those particular ones), tops, covers, misc. parts, etc. But you had to know what you were looking at because the salesmen didn't know what boat they went on. They have been advertising new 2002 Johnson 175s for $6995 and new 2002 Evinrude 90s for $4995. I was hoping they would have some deals on 50s or 60s but no such luck. |

Evidently MarineMax Killinger is savvy enough to know where to go looking for Whaler enthusiats. It might be that continuouswave.com is one of the first venues that they used to advertise a surplus Whaler. |

I think you will see more dealer consolidation among Brunswick brands. One thing that Brunswick wants from its boat dealers is that they do not sell competing brands. If an old line Boston Whaler dealer sold Yamaha outboards, they probably have been pressured to switch to Mercury. If a Whaler dealer sold a brand that competed with another Brunswick boat, for example Sea Ray competitor, the dealer might have been similarly pressured to drop the competition. Brunswick wants dealers to become more closely allied with its brands, and to commit to long term deals, say ten years or more. For the Brunswick Boat Group (see list of ten brands below), the model of success is Sea Ray. Selling Sea Rays has made millions of dollars for Brunswick and for the dealers that sell them, and that model is going to be applied to the other brands, too. The Boston Whaler boat is probably the finest brand name in all of boating, and any dealer would be glad to have it. Why not keep a jewel like Whaler in the family, with dealers sell Mercury engines, with dealer selling other Brunswick boats? It just makes sense. Hey, you don't see a car dealer selling Chevrolet's and Ford's. BRUNSWICK BOAT GROUP BRANDS |

I just noticed that TAL Marine, north of Atlanta is no longer listed as a Whaler dealership. It is now Bolling Bridge Marine with two locations. Acworth, GA which would cover Lake Alatoona and Gainsville, GA which would cover Lake Lanier. TAL did not have Whaler for long and carries several other brands. Does anyone have the scoop on why TAL dropped the Whaler brand??? I bought my Montauk from TAL early in 2001. |

Guess that Atlanta is not a Whaler market, Boating Atlanta had Whaler prior to TAL and could't make a go of it. TAL also sells Yamaha and that may also be a reason behind it. Before TAL Stovall was the dealer and they don't sell Whaler either even though they are Marine Max. |

Fla 15...were you at the Killinger marine yard sale? That was quite a hoot. l bought several hundred $$$$ worth of stuff for peanuts. l watched the fellow and gal load up all the wood in boxes and carry them out just as l got there. These are the items folks were talking about on E-bay (cooler cleats and such), if you knew what he paid for the boxes of mahogany wood you would be ill, but he did exactly what l would and put them on Ebay. I wished l had more $$$$ with me as l would have bought some of those cowlings and several of the many BW and Searay bimini tops with all the hardware for $30.00 a copy, probably 10% of retail. I did buy some brand new SS rails for the Sha for 20...initially l was not sure about the size and fit so l used killingers menemsha in the showroom to check it out....worked out real well. That was a sale that comes around once in a lifetime...and they fed ya with dawgs and burgers to boot. |

Yep, I was there. There were some steals but you had to need that particular piece and you had to know what you were looking at. There were a bunch of BW cushions that were a steal if you needed them and knew what they went to. Same way with motor cowlings. The motor cowlings were cheap and they are several hundred $ if you buy one new but I looked on E-Bay and was surprised to find that most of them on there only brought $15 - $50. They have some nice vintage boats in the showroom, don't they ? I would love to have that brand new 80s model 13' they have standing up verticle. It doesn't even have holes in the stern - no motor has ever been mounted on it. What time did you go ? I was there around noon on Friday, the first day. |

Fellas I went to the Killinger Owners tournament at Holiday Marina last Saturday, Sean told me that the Menemsha in the show room was refinished. It was sold new my Mr Killinger to a guy somewhere, he was able to buy it back and they restored it. Curious what will happen to it now. It is a good looking boat.

Knot, both of those boats there in the back of the showroom are restored. One of the salesmen several years ago told me that the Menemsha was sold new by Killinger to a guy in Pensacola and that Mr.Killinger tried for years to get him to sell it back to him. I don't remember if the guy finally got too old to use it or he bought it from his heirs but he finally got it back. I don't know if MarineMax will keep it in the showroom or if the Killingers will take it. The 13' standing up vertically is not restored. It is brand new original. It's an anniversary edition. What year would that be, 1988 ? |

Never heard of them. I guess if you live in some hamlet you might get a Chevrolet/Pontiac/Buick/Olds/Cadillac/GMC dealer. I've seen that in some small jerkwater towns. I don't think you'll see Brunswick Boat Group makin' too many deals where the Whaler franchise is handed out to guys that sell Yamaha, Bombardier, Grady-White, Scout, or GenMar brand boats/motors. But you go ahead and prove me wrong. |
Florida15 |

Maybe it's because they are an old Boston Whaler dealer so Brunswick doesn't mess with them but Killinger in Pensacola sells Merc,Yamaha and Johnson. Besides Whaler they also sell Grady White, Scout and Sea Ray. |

The Boston Whaler dealership here on Oahu also sells Sea Ray, Glacier Bay, Pro-Sport, Glass-Pro, Triumph and Twin Vee. As for outboard motors, they sell Evinrude, Johnson, Yamaha and Honda. I guess they have not updated their web site because they don't include Mercury. Up until this year they did not sell Mercury's but because of the package deal thing, they sell them on Boston Whalers now. |

From what I understand people from all over send their Mustangs to them for restoration. I know I was in there a couple of years ago and they were restoring a Shelby for some guy up north. It's amazing what those cars are worth these days. |

Sorry about the Rick Hendrick thing there Jim. Just wanted to point out you didn't have to live in a hamlet to find a dealer that sold more than one brand, and I thought, you being from Michigan and all, you might be interest in who sells all those cars you guys make up there. Wonder why automakers aren't afraid to let their dealers sell other brands, but Brunswick is? Seems like it should be against the law to try and monopolize the business like that. (That should fire up Brunswick and Attorney mongers;)) |

Hendrick Automotive may have many domestic brands-true. However, you will NEVER see domestics (from different corps.-GM/Ford) being sold under the same roof. The only exceptions to that are some old Chrysler/Ford combos. They are rare and are no longer available. The different mailing address explanation is VERY valid and true. All this from someone south of I-10 and about 2500 miles west. Marinemax dumped Whaler here too. |

Wow, Marine Max must be a large outfit. It's a shame they dumped Whaler. Whalers on the lakes of Arizona must be a fine thing. However, I think the Yankee line diverts down to I-8 in AZ. |

OK Barney, you got me on the I-8 issue. :-)) Yes, Whalers here are as rare as hens teeth. Marinemax (here) deals in only "flashy" boats and charges flashy prices for them. I almost bought their last Montauk. It was a '01' with a 90 Merc 2 stroke and a Shore Land'r trailer. There were asking $15,300 for it including a bimini and fish package. I'm still kicking myself over that lack of judgement. |

Naw, didn't think about it. Probably not. They rarely do except maybe in the spring. I looked at the Montauk and talked to a salesman a few minutes. I was looking at the new 15' and asked him the price. He said he was selling them all day long for $16,500 when Killinger had the place and now Marine Max's "discount" price is $14,900. I didn't have the heart to tell him I stopped at Killinger's in Fort Walton last summer and the salesman gave me a price of $12,900. |
