I have noticed a while back that there is a change in the decals. One side is consisting of the "Boston" behind the harpoons on top. The opposite side consists of the "Boston" before the harpoons. Why did the change take place? ---- JAZZ |

Good question... My Guardian is like that. Thought it was a mistake. |

I don't quite understand what you are describing on the logotype decals. There has always been a difference between port and starboard side decals. On the starboard side, it reads like this:
On the port side it reads like this <-----Boston On the starboard side the lettering is italic (or oblique), and on the port side the letter is reverse-italic (or reverse oblique). Is there something else besides this difference now being used in the logotype? |

Oh, I see it now. Looks like the port side logotype is now Boston <-------

Wait a minute! Now I am more confused. I just checked about thirty pages of Cetacea pictures and all the port side logos are like this: Boston <------- Looks like it has been that way for a long time! |

All the Boston Whaler decals that I have ever seen have been different on the Port side as opposed to the Starboard side... Why Whaler did this? Who knows... Seems backwards to me but that's the way they have been doing it... Jim's last post shows the correct Port side as I know it... This only decals I have seen different are some of the ones for sale on eBay.. I don't think most of these people selling these on eBay know Boston Whaler boats or they would not sell decals that don't match the originals... Joe |

Hi Jimh & Whalersman (Joe), The Boston Whaler decals have been different on the Port side of the boat for a long time. I just wondered how long it has been like that. Since my Emblems on the side both have the "Boston's" behind the harpoons. Boston-----> Thank you JAZZ |

The port side decal on my 99 Montauk has the harpoon aft of Boston. My brochures only go back to 1994 and the port decal is the same as on mine. Dick |

Bugsy--The port side decals have ALWAYS been different from the starboard decals. It is just that there appears to be a variation among the port side version: the original and now a reproduction. |

Why are the logos different port and starboard? Because the harpoon leads your eye in the direction it points, and Whaler wants it to lead your eye forward (makes the boat look faster ;-) Why is Bugsy's port decal different from everybody else's?

Thank you for all the replies. My grandma purchased those emblems from the Whaler factory (She also lives in Florida). I did realize that those emblems are different than the regular decals. At the Rendezvou, one of the people from Portage Entry noticed that the emblems were different from the decals also. He stated that the emblems were supposed to be for dealers. He said that Boston Whaler made the emblems special for dealers. Not many dealers purchased the emblems so they sat in the factory. Some pair go on Ebay, but my grandma purchased them right from the factory. Altogether, it is a specialty emblem that is put on the side of my boat to signify that it is a special boat to me. Thank you. JAZZ |

Just whent outside and looked at my outrage 18, and it occured to me that although the decals are not the same, from port to starboard, they read correctly. Left to right, top to bottom, Boston being the first word. |

Another case where the Whaler folks are inconsistent? If you look in the 1994 catalog (it has two girls in a jet boat on the front cover, look at the Tenders on page 9. Port side, Boston first, then the harpoon. Old way. Now look at the center pages (18 & 19) and page 23. Port side, harpoon first, then Boston. New way? I had noticed this when I had Janis make my decals for the Temptation. Looked like I could do it whichever way I liked, and I like having the harpooon first, so that's h ow I had Janis do mine (decals she did for me were GREAT, by the way). Now it looks like the e-bay decals aren't so bad, huh? Ace |

On page 20 of the 1994 catalogue (also showing a RAGE) the port side decal is shown in the variant style, as well. So Boston Whaler factory decals come in two flavors for port side! Personally, I like the variant style, i.e., where the harpoon is always forward of the "Boston". Bugsy--You have used the words "emblem" and "decal" to describe your boat's markings? Do you have decals? I have seen some plastic molded emblems at dealerships that had the logotype. Is that what you mean by "emblems"? |

Not to beat a dead horse, but I just browsed some catalogues. Going back to the 1960 catalogue it appears the original logotype on the port side of the boat was arranged with the word "Boston" forward of the harpoon. This is the traditional arrangement which is seen on almost all factory boats. Can anyone point to other catalogue pages that show the port side decal in the variant configuration? |

I replaced my original BW decals on my Nauset this past spring with Whaler issue decals. The layout or logo type was the same, however, the lettering and harpoon were bolder. The original had a bit more art work to the lettering and harpoon. There seemed to be a bit more flair to the original design. |

WhalerAce, I thought this was a clean boating site, you mentioned a couple of girls in a jet boat then you said something about tenders........... |

Since I cut these everyday, I think I have an answer to most of the questions on this page. Jazz, I have seen the "Emblems" on your 17'. These emblems were actually used for plaques given to the dealers and employees for accomplishments. I happen to have one in my office, that is mounted to a maghony plaque shaped as a hull, for first place employee fishing tournament. They only made starboard side of those, that is why it looks "backwards" on your port side hull. Why did Boston Whaler do this? There is that copyright thing again. It became harder to reproduce the logo's to manufacturers specifications. And, we have had yet another change in the Whaler decals this year. Thanks Ace, I thought your decals turned out great too. So, why is the starboard side logo used in all advertising? It points to the right, a "first learner in ad school"....Thanks agian to all, Janis |

On this issue, NOTE that the 2003 Nantucket and the 2004 Nantucket read differently as well. One decal reads 190 Nantucket and the other reads Nantucket 190, NO matter what side it is read from. Anyone aware of this change??? Glenn |

Dredging up an old post but I am just now noticing the two variations of the port side logo. So I perused Whaler's website and found some boats with Boston in front of the harpoon and some with Boston behind the harpoon. Presumably they are all new boats so it appears to be some inconsistency at the factory. The starboard side seems to be consistently behind the Harpoon, which makes sense to me. |
