Does anyone have experiance with these new combo units?
How do you like the combination? Is there too much info in one place? Is redundancy a concern? All opinions are welcome.

I'm looking at these as well. Most of the guidance I've received is "depends how you use them". If you are a serious fisherman, the flexibility of two displays may be a big plus -- watch the finder on one, mark positions on the GPS on the other....

Garmin has a new color combo unit (the 178c I believe) that is jut coming out now. Display is supposed to be great. MSRP in the $800-$900 range, can be had with either an internal or external antenna.

Good Luck!

Check out TheHullTruth.com Electronics forum. Those who have a radar overlay setup say they'll never go back to a setup that doesn't have that capability. One advantage is easily identifying with radar, bouys which are off-station from their charted location. This requires a heading sensor, and some use the KVH 1000 digital compass for that function. I'd look at a combo radar/chartplotter/GPS and separate fishfinder unless space dictates otherwise.

Resurrecting this old thread [Bad idea. Please re-post your new question about small boat electronics to the SMALL BOAT ELETRICAL thread. See you there. This ten-year-old not-very-informative discussion is going back to the archives.--jimh]
