Has anyone heard of an OUTRAGE 25 with Whaler Drive cracking at "the spot" [later clarified to mean cracks near the fuel vent].

I have a 1989 OUTRAGE 25' WD. A friend of mine was [speculating] if the Whaler Drive made a difference [in the frequency of the appearance of the cracking].

Hope to hear something, thanks.

3whaler,
First, welcome to the board, there is a wealth of information on this forum. I also have a 25 Outrage with whalerdrive but, I'm not sure what you are referring to? "The spot"? stress cracks? Please be more specific and I'll try to respond the best I can. Thanks, Homey.

3whale,

I am not sure what you are referring to.

If it is the well known crack at the fuel vent, this has been discussed several times here on the forum. I do not think this problem is limited to Whaler Drive equipped 25-foot hulls, though the added length and leverage the weight of the motors has on a Whaler Drive equipped hull may lead a higher percentage of those hulls developing this problem.

If you are referring to cracks in the Whaler Drive itself, I have seen a Revenge 25 Whaler Drive that has its Whaler Drive replaced by Whaler at no cost even though the hull was out of warranty.

The repair of the former problem has been addressed by Whaler in a repair bulletin. It involves quite a bit of work on the hull and amounts to a high-tech band-aid. Joe Orlando in Kemah, TX has a lot of experience with this repair. I has been reported the fix may cost $3,000 to $4,000.

Sorry for not being clear. I am referring to the hull cracking at the fuel vent, and I have never heard of this happening to a hull with a Whaler Drive.

I too have a very big interest it the cracking hull. If there is any-one who has first hand knowledge I would be very interested as I just purchased a 1988 25-foot hull with Whaler Drive. Thank you.

Chris,

Les and Chance never had this problem and they fished that boat hard for a few years. I honestly wouldn't worry about it. You have used that boat for years, and the cracks should have shown up by now if they were going to.

Thanks for the input. Still would like some more, if someone out there can help.

FWIW, my Whaler Drive (on a 22' Outrage) has some gelcoat Stress cracks, but no worse.

My 1987 25' Outrage with an Armstrong bracket has the cracks around the fuel vent on the port side. The cracks start near the top of the gunwale and spread down to the outboard side of the boat. Boston Whaler has a repair for this that I sent to Tom W. Clark and maybe posted somewhere on this site.
Our best guess is that with the added length of a bracket and in my case a forward cuddy, can cause this situation under specific circumstances.
I have not made the repair as the cracks have stopped and not progressed with additional use.
Hope this helps.
Andy

Does anyone know how much it would cost to fix the cracks?

Tom W. Clark knows. He wrote (above):

"I has been reported the fix may cost $3,000 to $4,000."

Would Whaler have to fix this?

"Blue 'N Brew" with whaler drive never had a problem, even though we added a 50 gallon fuel tank under the console and carried a 320 ssi in the bow.

"Ole Big" with whaler drive never had a problem.

"Mauldeen" without a whaler drive had the same 50 gallon tank and cooler set-up and it did crack along side about 7 years ago. Whaler factory did do the repairs under warranty.

"Houdini" without a whaler drive and no extra fuel tank did crack along side about 3 years ago. He had the work performed in Galveston, because Whaler would no longer do the work.

I would think that the Whaler drive models (since longer) would be more susceptible to cracking midship, but that is opposite in the four I listed here.
