What is the deadrise on the classic 22, 25, and 27-foot hulls c.1985-1992? Based on actual experience has the change in deadrise between the Classics and the current line of Whalers has made a dramatic difference in ride? Peter

Deadrise on a classic 27 (and I believe also a classic 25) is also 18 degrees at the transom. |

The classic Whaler era hulls all have a constant deadrise. I think the newer hulls tend to have a variable deadrise, as well as terminating at the transom in a steeper deadrise angle.It is generally agreed that when bashing into headseas, the steeper the deadrise the better. If that is the definition of "ride" then there is no doubt the newer hulls are a softer ride. |

Classic 25 foot hulls have a deadrise of 20 degrees.There is no question but that newer Whaler hull designs are smoother riding. |

Some of that "smoother" riding comes from significantly greater weight. |

does anyone have any data or opinions on the ride comparison between the new 32 outrage and the Jupiter 31? I have read the jupiter is 24 degrees at the transom and 61 degress at entry. What is the 32 Outrage? |

It is easy to test the "heavier is better" theory, if you have a light boat like a classic Boston Whaler 22/25/27-foot. Just add 600-1000 pounds of sand bags to the cockpit and go for a test ride. |

JimI satisified myself on the heavy light dispute a few years ago when I had a chance to try out the Contender 27 and a Regulator 26 in similar conditions. Both boats were wonderful and had great rides in the not too tall chop that day. I've come to believe that either approach can yield a great boat, but my bias has come around to the lighter design, assuming that it is done such that you don't lose the solid feel of a Whaler like boat. In Texas, the period of offshore waves (ie the distance between them)is such that length seems to matter more than weight for the best ride. For our coast, boats like the Contender 31 (Jupiter 31, Marlago, Fountain,etc) are what you want if you want to ride well and go fast. Slow down and most boats ride just fine. My Guardian 25 gives me the solid feel I like and can handle more weather than I can. If it were 5 or 6 feet longer, I'd be in heaven (and in hock). Steve |

Just add 600-1000 pounds of sand bags to the cockpit and go for a test ride."When my 25' Revenge W/T tank is nearly empty (140 gallons) the boat will ride "lighter" with a bit more "bounce" over choppy water. When I "fill 'er up", the ride is noticeably "heavier" with a more "weighty" ride, and slightly less responsive. You can feel there is more boat in the water with that full tank. If I'm adding roughly 110 gallons, we're talking about 700 pounds of added weight. In this particular instance, there is a phenomenon that is unmistakable. "As the boat gets much heavier, the wallet gets much lighter" Happy Tanksgiving to all. |

Not so fast! I have been on few heavy boats. I have been on the pre 92 Grady 20' 22' 24' boats which are among the heaviest boats in there class. They all are wet and pound. So one should not nescesarily imply that heavier is better because in some cases it is not. |

I guess I was trying to find the answer to 2 things actually deadrise at the transom, which by the responses here seem to be 20 degrees. The second part of it was, the deadrise at entry, are they all the same too?? On the weight thing, my 27 weighs in a approx 6800 lbs with engines, add another 1500 lbs of fuel,and maybe another 300-500lbs in gear and it makes for a pretty heavy 27 footer. It definately rides lighter with alot less fuel, but does weight become that much of a factor with deadrise? If thats the case , wouldnt draft also become a part of the equation?? Peter |

The total weight is a factor, but also the location of that weight is an important factor. Adding weight at the bow will not help the ride in most cases. |

Deadrise on your 27 at the transom is 18 degrees, not 20 degrees...this is straight from Boston Whaler. Not sure about the deadrise at the bow. |
