I forgot one of the 6 hp, 4 stroke models.

Mercury
•Four-Stroke
6 Hp - Rope Start, 15” shaft
Listed at 55 lbs
(add about 5 pounds for long shaft)

This Quick Reference Guide is basically for the most popular size of kicker,
6hp through 15 hp, that most Boston Whaler owners choose to place on their transom. Yes, there are other sizes but I believe these are the most popular.

Maybe Jimh can add this engine to the above list and delete this post if he has time or the inclination.

Thanks Joe, it's nice to have an overview. It seems that many members are interested in buying a kicker motor for their boat. Buying the right one is important and an overview can help at looking at all options available.

With all of these options for motors which one would be the most appropriate for a new Montauk 170 with a 90 hp 4 stroke. Given the weight limitation specified by BW has anyone had first hand experience with going over the weight limit based on the weights listed above.

Second question would be is there there much difference bewteen a 6 or 8 hp engine when you can't get the boat on plane anyway. Will a 6 hp push the hull at planing speed just as well as a 8 hp.

Any suggestions would help.

Thanks

Unless I am mistaken, the new 4-stroke Merc 9.9 HP Pro Kicker has 20" shaft, electric start and power trim, all for 102#?

Larry, LHG,

Why do you always do this?

If you take the time to go to the Mercury Website you would see what the webstie says. Why do you always have to come to your own concluslions rather than going by the manufacturers website?

http://www.mercurymarine.com/9.9_pro_kicker

Their website says 107 lbs not 102 like you say.

If you don't want to do the research, I will.
If you can't agree with the research that is taken directly from the manufacturers website, then you have a problem.

I personally am getting tired of your not wanting to believe what the Mercury website has to say about their own specifications.

Please. do your research.

The 9.9 Pro Kicker is available in Electric or Rope start.

They give the weight for the lighest version, the rope start at 107 lbs.
Yes, it is the 20" shaft.

You also have to add the weight of the battery if you get the eclectric start. Yes, the battery could be in the console to center the weight.

The 25" would be about 5 lbs heavier. Yes, maybe 2,3, or 4 lbs heavier.

The weight of the lightest version of the 9.9 Pro Kicker is 107 lbs according to their website.

You post hit me the wrong way......

You are mistaken

OK,

I am on a roll here.

I try and present all the information given on a particular product just as the manufacturer's website states.

Do I make mistakes at times? probably
Do I have Typo's? probably

If anyone finds a typo or a mistake, please let me know via this thread.

I enjoy research. A person can only present the research found as stated in print as being factual. The owners manual of such engines may differ from the manufacturer's website. Why is this? Laziness on the part of the webmaster to update the site? Misinformation? Or, maybe they really don't know what the heck they are printing anyway?

At any rate, thanks to the rest of you that appreciate the research that I presented, whether it was right or wrong. I did not do it. I only referenced what the manufacturer stated. As far as I am concerned the information is as accurate as possible.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother. Maybe I should just keep this information for myself. No, on second thought, I think it is a great reference for everyone.

If you all want me to stop. Please let me know.
I don't need the practice. I know how to do research.
Facts are facts. You can't argue with facts.

Joe,
Please don't stop doing what you do so well.
You've been a wonderful resource for myself, and many others here.
I hope it continues.

Hey Joe,

What about us poor boys who have the old vintage Johnson sea horses? :-)

I have some vintage wares clamped to my transom! The nice thing is, I would guess the 6hp kicker at about 60 lbs and she starts on the 2nd or third pull. I've ordered my steering rod from Cabellas (thanks to you) and I'll be burning some serious hours on her this season! Long live the old Johnson kicker!

Thanks Peter.

Steve,
The weights on the respective websites give the current production models and not the older models. In many cases, the older ones are very close to the same weight everything else being the same, rope start, long shaft, etc.

I know in my case, and probably yours, the weight of my 1988 Evinrude 8 hp kicker as stated in the owners manual is 58.5 lbs. This is very close to the weights listed above for the newer Bombardier 8 hp models, 61 lbs.. Both rope start and long shaft. Other manufacturers may vary and maybe the really old engines weigh much less, or maybe much more, depending on the model.

Mine (I think) was a 15 inch shaft to start but had an extention added to get down in the water. That may have added the extra 5 lbs or so. Otherwise I think the 61 lbs is darn close. I think I'll weigh it and post the results. I have saved this info in case I ever get a new kicker. I will kick the u know what out of this one first! I am searching around for another skiff to clamp this kicker onto for fishing little sloughs and freshwater locals.

I was just joking about the old kicker. I lurked around your website and found some killer information and data. Great stuff.

How about those new tohatsu/nissan featherweights.
They are 8 hp and 9.8 hp 4 strokes. They weigh 81 pounds.
