I'm new to boating and I'm considering two used boats that I came across: 1995 DAUNTLESS 17 or a 1997 OUTRAGE 17. The OUTRAGE is priced higher. Both boats are in very good shape. My wife and I have two young kids and are looking for a good all-around boat for skiing and maybe a little fishing. What are the pros and cons of each boat? Thanks

PROS - you found two awesome boats to choose from and, reading between the lines - saying that you're new to boating, you probably don't know how lucky you are.
CONS - You've found two awesome boats to choose from and we haven't. We've been looking for the right Montauk for months and are Whaler-obsessed real bad. We've had two owners back out of sales at the last minute saying they couldn't sell their boats because "I love it . . ."
How can you miss?
This reminds me of the dude my buddies took steelhead fishing in Oregon who had never been fishing in his life. He could barely cast and hooked and landed three in less than an hour walked away at the end of the day saying "that was easy ... I don't know why you guys make such a big deal of these steelhead " and never fished again.

The Dauntless 17 was built on the Outrage 17 hull, so both boats will have similar ride and handling.
The Outrage has better fishability and more deck room. The Dauntless probably has more seating.
In my opinion, if your stated desires for the boat are accurate I would go with the Dauntless. The dual consoles will give much better weather protection. Now if you are going to do a lot of fishing go with the Outrage.

Don't know what price you are looking at, but I just purchased a 1995 Dauntless 17 with Evinrude 115hp and 2003 EZ Loader trailer all in excellent shape, and I paid $13,000. I think that should be about the going rate, but I have seen higher at various web sites.

I too just purchased a 1995 Dauntless 17 with 115 Johnson and galvanized trailer, both in excellent shape and ALL the records since its purchase. Paid $14,000. Seems here on the west coast Whalers (and quality boats in general) command a higher price.

Looked at both boats last year and bought the Outrage. I have 4 boys under 10. We fish, ride and ski. The boat is fantastic. If you are in a warm climate I like the outrage. I would suggest one other factor. If you plan to sell the boat in a few years the Outrage has a better resale. This is mostly due to the fact that the 17 Outrage is no longer sold to the public. Have to be in law enforcement to get that model. Supply and demad comes into play. Also adding a t-top to the Outrage is a big plus.

I have a 1998 17 Outrage and it is by far the finest 17 foot boat I have been on, However I don't think the 1995 Dauntless is the same as an Outrage. Later model Dauntless hull may be similiar but I dont think that era Dauntless is the same just look at the two side and you will see what I mean.

I think the difference in price between the OUTRAGE and DAUNTLESS models reflects the demand of the market for these boats. The Outrage is in higher demand and will generally sell at a higher price. If the Dauntless is a better boat for you, you can benefit from its lower price due to lower demand.
Buyers of small boats should consider that it is more comfortable to operate a small boat in a standing position when in rough water. The older style Dauntless models with dual consoles may not lend themselves to being operated while standing. If the boat will be used only in protected water this may not be a consideration. Most dual console boats in smaller hull sizes are great for cruising around lakes, but you will find them less suitable than an Outrage if you use them in open water with some waves.
