It's boat show season again, and many of us have had the chance to talk to factory reps from various boat and motor makers. What have you heard from those reps regarding future products or hints of products? You don't have to mention the boat show or names, just the product discussions. Here's mine:

We got into a discussion about fishing shallow water, and how Whaler did not really have a "bay boat" to compete with the likes of Pathfinders, Blue Waves, etc. I thought the Dauntless 22 was too heavy, too expensive, and overkill. Was told to "wait until next year" with hints of a longer and wider Montauk like boat to be equipped with Livewells, and perhaps 150hp power rating. This would be a shallow running light boat, no inner liner. Was also told it won't likely have tunnel.

What have you heard..........?

In another thread I have mentioned my speculatory numbers for the rumored 190 mt. I think it will likely be powered with a 135hp rating based on the factor of 1.5 increase shared by the current classic lineup.

example:

130 sport- max 40hp x (1.5)= 60hp
150 sport/mt- max 60hp x (1.5)= 90hp
170 mt- max 90hp x (1.5)= 135hp
190 mt- max 135hp x (1.5)= 202.5 (200hp)
*210 mt- max 200hp x (1.5)= 300hp
*230 mt- max 300hp(twins maybe)

Ok, ok, ok! I'm getting carried away now but you can see the pattern.

In any case I hope that whaler would adhere to this formula as a minium for setting the hp rating and not set it as low as 115 hp. to try and move some 115 mercs.

It is fun to dream and speculate though isn't it!

Don't expect to see whaler design it around the current merc 115. This is expected to be the last year for those. Next season will bring a naturally asperated (non supercharged) 75, 90, and 115 Verado. I would expect to see them introduced at Miami. Whaler is also planning on showing the 190 Montauk at the Miami show or so we were told at the dealer meeting. They will start shipping mid summer. I do expect the 190 to be at least a 135 but more likely a 150hp rating. also look for a built in fuel tank. Livewell will be offered. Whaler is also trying to retrofit the Montauk 170 with a livewell.

I wonder how secretive boat builders have to be in testing their new designs before they arrive at a final version. some postings to CW have suggested they should have sought more input from users (fishermen) before going in to production.

The military has the famous Area 51 where they developed and flew the SR 71 and stealth fighter at night for years in total secrecy before they got them right, but they have a little different budget that Brunswick and no competitive pressures.

Do people think there are these and other future Whalers buzzing around on Lake X?

These days most everything gets designed and "tested" by some desk jockey and his Mac. (then they might go back to the drawing board AFTER WE do the real testing!

The 190 Montauk Prototype is off the line and on the water. Whaler puts over 100 hours on their boats before they hit production. This boat will be introduced at miami but they will keep fine-tuning it until it goes into full production late spring or early summer.

I find it interesting that everyone looks to see what fishing options are available and base the success of whaler's design on that. In our market, 75% of a whalers use is for non fishing related activities. Whaler offeres a livewell on the new 15' yet most boats have been sold without it so far. Obviously this is not the same in all areas.

I was at the LA Boat Show today and I asked the Schock Boats rep. about the 190 Montauk. He looked at me and said, "Where did you hear that??" It was kind of funny.

My favorite part about going to boat shows: Reps. always want to show me the head. I always want to start at the helm and see how I like what I see there: visibility, instrument layout, location of controls, stuff like that.

The Evinrude rep. I spoke to today impressed me, because he didn't blow me off or find it odd that I had questions about the E-Tecs. He told me that the i-command instrument system should be available on the smaller E-Tecs (90 hp and below) in a year or so. Is that old news? I haven't been following the discussion here as closely as I should.

One more detail: I'm sure the rep. told me that the 190 Montauk would be rated at 115 hp. When I expressed surprise, he told me that it only weighs a few hundred pounds more than the 170....He also said it would have below-deck fuel tankage.

A 190 Montauk with a 115 hp outboard is going to sell as well as snowcones in Alaska.

I'm fading too. I ran out of Glen Livet and now I'm drinking Grey Goose Orange. I need the vitamin C. :)

I saw the livewell in the Montauk 15 at the Austin boat show. It is a Modular design that will probably fit into any hull the same width as the 15. BillS

115 hp!!! I said it a hundred times....Whaler under powers ALL its smaller boats, I would be shocked if they actually rated it for the right size engine. Lawyers I guess, too bad.

I like my Nantucket, would LOVE it with 50 more horses, but thats another subject that has been beat to death.

Once I arrived at the boat show and started crawling around on boats, I was sorry I hadn't brought a flashlight. Take yours with you when you go!
