Just got word my boat is ready for pick up. I'm told the boat looks great with the new E-TEC hanging on the transom. Can't wait to see it!!!! Can't wait to open her up too..... :-)

I should be picking it up tomorrow is all works out as planned.

Pictures to follow.

Wish me luck!

Jason

BTW... the motor came with an aluminum propeller as part of the deal. I'm toying with the idea of a S/S prop for those times I'm not running in the shallow stone riddle areas.

Any recommendations?

JayR,

I run a 73 Outrage with a 225. I run a 21 pitch Saltwater Series Yamaha prop. I would think you would run a 19 pitch with a 150. Alot depends on the model prop (Rake and all that) but I would think a 19 pitch with atleast a 14 7/8 diameter.

BTW, Nice choice in engine. I think it s a nice match for the boat. I know you were going to jack plate it to compensate for the 25 inch shaft, did you do it?

Anthony, why do you feel he needs such a big diameter prop?
I would say a 14.25 x 17 Stiletto will be the key.
I don't think the 150 can twist a 19p to recommended maximum rpms.
I run a 14.25 x 19 & 21, [ 1979 ...20' "V"20 outrage ] depending if I'm fishing the ocean or river & what set of holes the engine is monuted on .
There's no reason for the prop to be any bigger in diameter.

Anthony,
The motor is a 20" shaft not a 25" and I did put the jack plate on.

The reason I used the jack plate was due to the hull extensions. I was concerned I would not realize the full advantages of the tilt and trim due to them. Seem like big trim tabs when I looked at the hull.... Also, there was not much room for adjusting the height of the motor as the lower mounting holes had to go in one spot and one spot only. I want that motor to be positioned precisely where it should be.

I'll be picking it up late tomorrow morning. I'll report back what it is propped with when I get back. The dealer was supposed to take her out for a test run, hopefully they did just that.

Well, it's home....
Torrential downpours all the wat there and back. Not a fun ride but the sight of the rigged boat more than made up for the soaking I received hooking it up and running home. Had an exhuast support on my truck let go as I was parking the trailer. Better here than on the road.

Sal, you were very close with your recommendation. The prop that was supplied was a 14.8 / 17

No idea how it will perform as the boat was not taken out for a trial run before I picked it up. I had waited long enough and the weather here was not cooperating.

I'm stoked. Can't wait to get it all wet.

I'm dead serious, that rig is a show piece.
That white engine matchs the boat beautiful.
Beautiful job on the wood.

JayR- Your boat is a real beauty! Wow, I can see why your pumped! Let us know how it performs with the new engine!
If your going to run in rocky areas you won't want a SS prop.

Thanks for all the compliments everyone. Just wish I had time to take that single layer of bottom paint off before the motor went on.

Hooter.. the wood is all original except for the gunnel caps and the piece running horizontal along the transom.

I added those to cover some holes rather than repair the glass. The boat had saddle tanks and they were removed. I also made and added rod holders onto the ceiling boards.

There is still a lot to do but she is coming along. I'll use it for the season and then bring her back into the garage for what's left to be done over the winter. It will be here soon enough....

Jay,

Absolutely beautiful - I'm drooling!

John, if your hull has the ribs, it is not a '74. They were only produces as 1971 and 1972 models.

What is the hull number and do you have pictures?

I have pics that I can email you & I think the hull id# is 1 8548c - not sure if that is right or not? thats whats on the title along w/ 1974 ? I don't even have the boat yet - am hoping to pick her up tomorrow.

Thanks - John

Just got them. Thanks!
It is definitely not a 1974, no matter what you have been told. '71 or '72 for certain.

You have a project ahead of you. Get rid of that T-top. It will do a number on the floor as it is not thru bolted and can't be.

Wood looks intact, is it still solid?

That come out of NJ? Seen one like it on eBay a few times.

yep - in NJ.......Yeah - its still VERY solid, but I know - I have A LOT of work ahead of me!!!! Thanks for the info on ribbed ones only being 71 or 72!

Shot of the jack plate. 8" set back seems to be a good fit. Might have gone with the 10 in retrospect.

Jay, the boat looks great, especially with that new E-TEC! Great job on the brightwork, I can't get enough of that varnished wood on those old Whalers. The stripers will be committing suicide when they see you coming this summer, just to get a look inside that boat.

JayR posted 05-23-2006 06:32 PM ET (US)     Profile for JayR  Send Email to JayR
Just about ready to take her out for her inaugural run. I am hoping to get her in the water on Friday or Saturday. I lost a couple days to a termite problem in the house. They've been exposed and killed. Rebuilding the sill plate can wait!

I need to pick up a new anchor, compass and fire extinguisher tomorrow. That should cover everything I need to get.

Can't wait!!!

Well, tomorrow makes a month and the boat has still hit the water....

THAT CHANGES IN AN HOUR!!!!!!!

Yee-haaa!!!!!

Killing two birds with one stone too. We are going to check out waterfront property for sale while we are out. Should make for a fun day.

Can't wait to report back on how things go.

Don't forget pictures Jay...

Did you put the bimini up yet. I'm looking forward to seeing how she looks.

JayR posted 06-22-2006 07:25 PM ET (US)     Profile for JayR  Send Email to JayR
Bay was rough, real rough.... I had the camera but was having so much fun, I neglected to photograph anything...

Bimini slides and new straps have not come in yet so it is still sitting in the garage.

Motor ran very well. A little rough for the first couple seconds and I then realized the vent on the tank was closed. opened it up and all was fine.

Quiet, smooth and POWERFUL. Wow!!! Talk about hole shot.... I felt like a bullet in a gun barrel.

One thing I am not to fond of is the throttle response. There appear to be three points where it jumps in rpm as the throttle is advanced. I could not run it in between 2000 and 2400 rps.... It happened higher up in the rpm range but as choppy as it was, I could not make note of the point.

Hopefully future outings will allow me to get a better feel for it and take notes.

I got 32 MPH at 3800 RPMs and it topped out at 5600 RPMs but I could note determine speed as the GPS shut down (hand held on batteries). Maybe next time.

All in all, I am very pleased. My wife who gets sick each time the exhaust is upwind was not bothered in the least and I tried to give her a face full of the stuff.....

Can't wait to get back out.

See your dealer, there is an improved software revision for the 150's. Depending on the engine, there is a new throttle cam that eases the rpm change in the 2000 rpm range. It should take care of the jumps in rpm there.
JayR posted 06-23-2006 09:33 AM ET (US)     Profile for JayR  Send Email to JayR
Seahorse, where can I get more info on the software revision? My dealer is slow to respond and I would like to have the details at hand before speaking with them.

Thanks,

JayR,

I saw the differences in the 150 throttle cams today. The newer one has a continously curved surface without the "peak" that the older cam had.

Jay, the acceleration on my E-TEC 90 is unbelievable, so I usually hold the shaft of the throttle arm, with my hand resting on the control box, in order to soften the ride for the family. Otherwise, she wants to leap up on a plane and go screaming down the shoreline.

JayR,

I gave you the wrong serial number. The improved cam starts with SN 5161838 and up. Sorry about that, you still have the older type cam on your motor.

Did your dealer tech talk to BRP service yet?

JayR posted 06-28-2006 08:59 AM ET (US)     Profile for JayR  Send Email to JayR
I haven't heard from him yet. I did email to tell him I did not need it based on the previous serial number. So, I just emailed him again and I'll call him a little later today to make sure he is working on it.

I had him order the I-Command gauges the other day so I will be certain to have them take care of it all when they do the install.

Thanks for you help. I really appreciate it.

You wouldn't have a picture of the upgrade cam would you?

This dealer no doubt will need to be walked through the whole thing like a pre-schooler. They are not a high volume dealer and my 150 was the 1st they installed. Guess I'm the Guinea pig....

seahorse, thanks for all your help. Hopefully, I'll get it all resolved when the I-Command gauges get installed.
