| Bjornas |
Hi all, I was stumbling around in the reference section checking out the model year info and wood diagrams for my 1967 13 footer. For kicks and giggles I went to the photo I had taken of the transom number and compared it to Continuous Wave reference section. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n270/bjornas/Hull_Number.jpg Here is the ref section info: " On all my boats documentation it says it is a 1967, (Reg, etc) but according to the graph it appears to be a 1972! Am I reading this right? Then the reference section goes on to say: "1972 changed to 20-inch height transom, hull and interior gelcoat changed to desert tan." Was that a mid year thing? For instance was 2A in 1972 the old style, and 2B was the new? Thanks |

I thought the last year for blue interior was 1974 |
| Florida15 |
No, I think it was '72. Tom or the Judge can confirm that. |
| Tom W Clark |
Blue ineterior to Desert Tan interior was a 1972 mid-year change. The 20" transom came a year later. |
| Bjornas |
So the question still stands.. Is my boat a 1972 despite all the previous registrations and bill of sales? They explicitly state 1967. Were they all wrong? Did someone get confused along the way? Thanks |
| Tom W Clark |
Rolfe, You don't tell us if your boat is blue or Desert Tan. You don't say if it has a wrap around splashwell or a straight across splashwell. You don't indicate if it has a 15" transom or a 20" transom. The answers to these questions will pin it down. You also don't tell us what your Hull's stenciled number is but if it starts with 2B then no, it is not a 1967 and all your paperwork is incorrect. |
| Bjornas |
Hi Tom, I had posted a link of my Whalers transom in the original post. It has the stencil number and shows the interior is blue with a notched 15 inch transom. Stencil number = 2A8998 |
| Tom W Clark |
Ok, I missed the photo link. Is the splashwell straight across or the wrap around style (like a 17 footer's)? Does the hull have a "smirk" or not? I am guessing it has a wrap around splashwell and a smirk. If so it is a 1971 or 1972. |
| Bjornas |
One other note.. It does have the small splash well and a bulkhead with norman pins on each end. I don't have a picture of that loaded to photobucket, but I can go out and take one if needed. It is in my backyard. |
| Bjornas |
The bulkhead is straight across, and it is the orignal non smirk with the two raised skegs on the stern. |
| Bjornas |
Maybe these will help? http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n270/bjornas/IMG_3005.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n270/bjornas/IMG_2865.jpg |

Very interesting. I read the number as 2A8998 as well. I don't think there is any question about that. It is definitely NOT a 1969 model. I had a 13 footer with Stenciled Number 2A4131 and it was a 1970 model shipped from the factory May 27, 1970. Your boat is sequentially later than that but not by much. It must be one of the last of the non-smirked 13s made and is probably a 1971 model manufactured in 1970. |
| Tom W Clark |
Oh, all classic 13s, newer or older, have those little fins on the bottom. It is not a distinguishing feature |
| Bjornas |
Ok Tom, Here is the big kicker.. I have looked at many pictures of 1970, 1971, and 1972 13's.. None of them have the small splashwell like mine does.. I am going to go take a pic of it. Despite the boat being upside down in the dark because I have to know! |
| Tom W Clark |
Excuse me, I had meant to say it "is probably a 1972 model manufactured in 1971." |
| Tom W Clark |
Actually I would characterize the straight across splashwell as the large one and the wrap around splashwell as the small one. |
| Bjornas |
Ok Tom, I must be hitting the diet pepsi too hard, or it has just been so long since I have seen the interior. When I bought the boat last May, I brought it home and that day flipped it over. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n270/bjornas/Rear_Interior.jpg |
| Bjornas |
This one looks exactly like it on Cetecea.. http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/cetaceaPage10.html It must be a 1972... This is going to be a pain when I go register the boat next year! Do I just tell the registry all the previous owners had it wrong all this time? I hope they are going to buy this one. There gonna love me when I come in with print outs of JimH's reference section and other assorted pictures of the stencil and hull configurations proving the previous faulty documentation. I may need Continuous wave testimonials! Even my bill of sale says 1967. Sorry to take up so much bandwidth, but this detective work was kind of fun. Best, |

I'd just register it again. Let sleeping DMV agents lie.

Rolfe, A picture is worth a thousand words. You have the wrap around splashwell which is the same as all 13 footers from 1972 to 1999. Your boat is the odd transition year of 1972 where the new splashwell and smirk was introduced, but still had the blue interior and the 15" transom. I was confused by your claim that your hull does not have the smirk and that there are two norman pins in the splashwell. That is NOT the case with your hull. |
| Bjornas |
Since the hull is such an odd duck, I am not sure which wood diagram applies to my boat. It has the 15 inch transom, with the hull of the 20 inch. Which one will apply to my boat? Thanks, |
| Bjornas |
Here is the next possiblity. I am thinking my boat was originally a sourpuss model. Jims reference table says the sourpuss went from 1971-1975 but retained the 15 inch transom. Could this be the answer? My boat only came with thwart seats, but could just have those other pieces missing. As noted from JimH's reference table, did the sourpuss retain the blue interior and 15 inch transom 1971-1975? 13-SOURPUSS 13' 4" 5' 5" 6" 15" 1971-1975 Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks, |
| Tom W Clark |
No, that is incorrect. The Sourpuss was produced as a model from 1971 to 1975 but not with a blue interior and 15" transom after 1972. The change to the Desert Tan and 20" transom was consistent for all models of 13s. The Sourpuss model was nothing more than a Sport Center Steer with the addition of optional wraparound rail and seat back plus the denim cushions. Your boat may, or may not, have been a Sourpuss (a lot of Sourpuss models were produced so it may well have been), but the year is 1971 or 1972. You could contact Whaler customer service with your hull number and they may be able to look up the record of your hull and tell you. |
| Bjornas |
I understand your point about the sourpuss not being a hull model, and just being a configuration. Is there a reason why there is a special wood diagram labled sourpuss? http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/13/graphics/Sourpuss-wood.pdf Is there a good explanation for this? It appears to be the correct one for my hull? |
| Tom W Clark |
Rolfe, It s not a special wood locating diagram. I tis just the wood locating diagram for the early smirked hulls. The term "Sourpuss" was the nickname given to the new "smirked" hull. That drawing says Sourpuss to differentiate it from the earlier hull. After the introduction of this newer hull, Whaler made a model named "Sourpuss" I suspect, in part, to promote the fact the hull design was new and improved. The wood locating diagram here: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/13/graphics/13Wood.gif ...is for the newer 1977 and later hulls with the square bow locker and bow step pads. Though the drawing says 4/71 on it, it is actually an update of the earlier drawing and should not be noted in the Reference Section as being a 4/71 drawing. Yes, I know, it is very confusing. A lot of Whaler literature is. |
| jimh |
Perhaps the term "sourpuss" was used prior to "the smirk" as a descriptor for the new bow design on the classic Whaler 13-footer. |
| Tom W Clark |
Jim, That was precisely the point I was trying to make. I think a better caption for the link to this wood locating diagram, located here: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/13/graphics/13Wood.gif ...would be: "Boston Whaler Dwg 15013300, Wood Locating Diagram—13' 3" Sport Hull, 1977 and Later" |
| Bjornas |
The diagram that says sourpuss does have the "New" smirk hull but location "E" has the 14 inch transom. Also note location "F" has the cutout for the kicker as is clearly shown on the picture of my stern. They are definately two distinct diagrams and should have a distinction I would imagine. Also the newer 1977 hull diagram shows the foam fill tube inside the bow locker, where on the other sourpuss it shows the earlier hull layout. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n270/bjornas/Rear_Interior.jpg This photo clearly shows the indentation for the kicker on the right |
| Bjornas |
One other note. It appears the sourpuss wood diagram really is only for 13 Whalers made between 1971 and 1972. I think calling it pre 1977 creates more confusion as after 1972 the 14 inch transom was dropped as well as the kicker location and other changes. It would be interesting to get the real answer from Boston Whaler on what they actually termed this short lived hull. It must have a name! Perhaps the hull is actually named "soupuss" as the factory diagram indicates! |
| Bjornas |
I received my correspondence from Chuck Bennet at Boston Whaler on the production information for my hull. "Hi Rolfe, Actually, when I first started in 1975, the old 15" transom 13' molds were pulled out again for a special run of boats for Italy" I thought it was interesting about the 15 inch shaft run in Italy. Thank you Tom Clark and Chuck Bennett for clearing up the history of my boat! It is very much appreciated. Best regards, |
