I've a Evinrude 75 HP E-TEC. Now I [wish] to tune this to a 90 HP E-TEC--they have both the same technical specifications. Can someone advise me how to do this and where to get these tuning spare parts chip?--THANKS

The easiest and least expensive way to get a 90 HP anything is to buy the 90 HP anything in the first place.

This is a common question here and at other sites across the Internet for all types of motors where powerhead platforms support multiple HP models.

To date, I've not heard of a successful conversion for an old technology motor, where there are no electronics controlling things, etc.

For the E-TEC - I don't even think that your dealer can accomplish this without a new EMM....and BRP won't sell you a replacement EMM without a serial number for your motor - meaning that they'll ship you an EMM for a 75 HP motor.

Hell - FORD motor company wouldn't even sell my mechanic a rear shock/strut for my 2002 Explorer without getting the VIN so they knew exactly what vehicle the part was being used for.

I wish you good luck in accomplishing this task, but think you're risking a lot and will spend a lot more than if you had just purchased a 90 HP motor in the first place.

I have to disagree with part of Buckda's recommendation. It is possible to do the conversion on "old" outboards. When I was guiding full time I ran an outboard for many years that was affectionately known around camp as "HP". IT was a forty horse yamaha outboard with a jet drive lower unit, and (Keep in mind that I am not a motor head so I dont know all the technical info) by installing fifty horse carbs and tweaking a couple other things the motor basically became a fifty horse. Now I dont know the full scope of the mods, and its not like we put it on a dyno before and after to see what hp it was generating, but of our fleet of a dozen or so yamaha forties, it was the top performer and would flat out walk away from the others.

That being said, I think trying to convert a newer 2 stroke, especially one like an e-tec would be dicy at best. THere are so many electronic things to worry about now, computers and such. THat could be a nightmare which in the worst case could result in a thrashed motor and a voided warranty on said thrashed, brand new, motor. Dont do it.

I believe the two motors have different exhaust manifolds to boot. There are no after market parts available. I had this conversation with BRP customer service years ago, and I was told that even if it could be done, the replacement parts alone exceed the difference in price.

Seems to me there is a well respected poster, Erik Sellis, who is also in Belgium and may be able to lead jefjef to a local (European) dealer who then may able to help him out.

In a modern engine, where all the operating parameters are contained in firmware in the stored code of the engine's electronic control module, there is no way to turn an engine of one horsepower rating into another horsepower rating without having access to the manufacturer's proprietary software.

In the case of an E-TEC motor you would need to be able to install the software code into the Engine Management Module (EMM) to tell the engine it was now a 90-HP instead of an 75-HP. This software is only available to authorized dealers. Therefore, in order to accomplish what you want, you will need an authorized dealer to participate.

I do not see any potential gain or profit for an authorized dealer to go around upgrading engines. I am certain that once the word got out that a dealer was doing this, the manufacturer would be very displeased. In the United States there are stiff penalties for doing this sort of thing due to the affect on the engine's exhaust emissions.

This sort of inquiry is often asked but seldom, if ever, reported on with success.

I suspect that down the road a few years, when "used" parts for some of today's modern engines start showing up on EBAY and Craig's list, sauvy outboard enthusiasts will be "upgrading" their outboards for more performance. Technically, it may not be approved or emissions legal...but it's going to be done. There are a number of Mercs out there right now that can "find" more horsepower just by installing a different ECM.

Retro-fitting another motor's EMM won't work (very well) on an E-TEC. The EMM has to be programmed with several parameters (callled coefficients) for each injector. It is the fine-tuning of the software to the injector which (I presume) is crucial to the operation of the E-TEC. There are warnings to the dealer and technical force never to just bolt on an injector without resetting the injector coefficients in the EMM to the values for the new injector.

This is an interesting topic. Hopefully someone who actually knows what they are talking about will add to it.

It's common to get considerable gains in HP on computer controlled car/truck engines by changing the ECM, the intake and the exhaust.

I don't know why this won't work on outboards too.

But I don't know what I am talking about either.

If you were to find a matching set of injectors and EMM I think you might have a 90 hp.

I have been told that on my 200 Ficht there is no difference between the 200 and 225 except the programming. No hard parts at all. I suspect the same on the E-TEC 90/75. It is much cheaper that way for the manufacturer, higher volumes/lower prices.

The place that told me that is DFI Technologies who repairs the EMMs. They also told me that they could but would not, by some contract are not allowed to do it.

As JimH said the injectors have coefficients that must be programmed in to th EMM. You could have your injectors rebuilt by them which at that time they would give you the coefficients to program in on replacement.

I have the software for Ficht and E-TEC. If I get time I could check whether it will spit out the coefficients for the injectors. If it does you would then only have to find a used 90 hp EMM and put those coefficients into it.

So that is my rambling thoughts on this.

It will take a few years but once used parts start becoming avail on eBay and other places, this kind of conversion will be possible. Unless you can find a junk 90hp engine though, it will be way too expensive to try this now.

Besides going from a 75 to a 90 will probably only gain you 2 mph or so anyways

Considering that BRP is constantly refining the software/firmware/whatever you call it for the emm, I can only wish you good luck doing the conversion. As Jimh pointed out, the parameters need to be set very specifically for the injectors; I burned through two powerheads straight from the factory when my motor (90 hp etec) was brand new due to a faulty injector or bad programming on the emm. The calibration numbers for the injectors on my current motor seem to bear absolutely no realtionship to each other (if you just look at the numbers on the tags) but obviously make sense to the emm. Unless you can find some means to decompile the firmware in the emm and then rewrite it, or at least find some means of reprogramming the thing you will likely have little luck in your endeavor.

And as someone else already pointed out, you are not going to gain much in speed anyhow.

Considering the potential to mess up relative to the cost of purchasing the desired motor in the first place, I would say that the potential benefit to loss ratio is not very good. Unless of course you got the 70 hp for next to nothing.

When I posted earlier about hp gains from changing to a different ECM....I was referring to Merc motors. To the best of my knowledge and experience, Merc does not require any dealer performed "recalibrations". If Merc makes a change to an ECM...you buy a new ECM. They do not offer re-programming via computer downloads. So there are models that share identical components other than the ECM...and that is where the difference in hp occurs...in the programming inside the ECM. So if you put a 225hp ECM on a 200...you will get a 225. There may also be other subtle differences on other models such as a different exhaust megaphone and different sized throttle body, or different port timing. But so far, Merc's electronics do not require special dealer/mechanic tinkering with software programming. I suppose this is all subject to change as time goes by. But for now at least, it looks like Merc has a simpler system to deal with.

I really doubt the accuracy of sosmerc's observation about the non-programmable nature of the engine control firmware on Mercury motors, particularly on the newer models like a Verado. In order for the engine control module to store information about what has been happening to the motor, for example, how many hours it has run, what the most recent fault codes were, what the engine speed history has been, the controller must contain some memory which can be altered. If the controller has memory which can be altered, it may be programmable. My speculation--based on some third-hand knowledge--is that a Verado motor can be changed by field reprogramming of its controller to a different horsepower than its original.

The controller in most automobile engines is self-programmable, that is, it modifies its own programming as it learns how the engine runs. In some devices the modified code is in volatile memory, and, if the battery is disconnected, the stored parameters are lost. If you disconnect the battery from a modern car engine, the programming returns to baseline. After you drive it a few hours, the controller re-learns new parameters for optimum engine performance. I have not heard of any outboards using this technique. I think the main reason is that most outboards are still running in a open-loop mode and do not have oxygen sensors in their exhaust to provide feedback on combustion gases.

If it were simple to decompile and reverse engineer the stored algorithm in an engine's controller, I think there is some economic incentive to do this. In the case of automobile engines, sold by the millions and with intense interest to improve performance for racing, this has been done. But until someone demonstrates this on an E-TEC, it clearly has not been done by anyone other than the factory or a dealer using the proprietary factory software.

Hi All,

Thanks all for your info however on my boat a max. of 75HP is allowed (insurance) so that is why I did not buy a 90HP engine...but would gladly have the 90 HP power... and it is not to have the 2 miles of extra speed but to have some spare in emmergency situations...

PS/ I have a Audi wich was electronic tuned from 138 HP to 164 HP by changing the chip at AUDI dealer keeping the full Audi warranty on this uptuning... why can this not go by outboard engines???

Anyone know the adres/mail address from Bombardier???

I believe they are also the head office for Europe. You may want to ask someone there if it is possible. I personally doubt it.
I also have a chip set in my SUV bringing it from 143 to 168 PS but I still doubt if it's that straightforward for an E-TEC outboard.

I don't believe that I said Merc ECU's and ECM's are not programmable. What I attempted to say was that currently dealers and technicians do not have an easy way to re-program them. You can send your ECU or ECM to a company called CDI/Rapair and they can re-program some of the units for a different fuel curve. Mercury will "re-flash" some units if you return them to Mercury.
Verado engines may have some capabilities that are not currently present on Optimax or other PCM 555 equipped Mercury Outboards.
To my knowledge, there are no "aftermarket" chips available to alter fuel curves on Mercury 1998 and Newer Outboards. (which doesn't mean there aren't people out there trying :) )
I have over 25 years experience in the business of working on Mercury Outboards...but I don't pretend to know it all.
I learn something new everyday.

I should also mention that Tony Brucato has developed an adjustable unit called the "PCU" for High Performance Mercury Outboards that enables the user to fully adjust the fuel curve, even while under way. You can review his product at brucatosvs.com or call and talk with Tony at 919-718-0249
Since these units are theoretically to be used on "racing" outboards, perhaps they can get around the scrutiny of the EPA and thus can be used on 1998 and newer products as well as older products. Sorry...Mercury Outboards only...so far.
I would also like to mention that some Mercury Outboards do actually have a small adjustment screw on the ECU that enables an overall 10% up or down offset to the factory setting. And some Mercury Outboards can perform minor fuel offset adjust through the use of the DDT tool...but I don't consider this as having the ability to completely "re-program" the engine control computer.

sos--Thanks for the follow-up. That is an interesting point. Maybe the Mercury engine controllers can be programmed but the factory has not let the genie out of the bottle by giving their dealers the facility to do it.

Re the E-TEC injectors and their coefficients: I think this is an interesting situation for modern manufacturing. I have not seen this explained anywhere, but I make the inference that the inclusion of three or four variable values iassociated with an individual E-TEC injector means that there is some variation among injectors. To me this indicates that the manufacturing process is not able to produce the E-TEC injector with absolute consistency from unit to unit. To compensate for production variation from injector to injector, I suspect that each individual injector must be tested. The performance is observed and recorded, producing the various coefficients that are unique to the injector.

When an individual injector is installed in an engine, its coefficients are entered into the code which will operate the injector. This process is not speculation on my part; this is a mandatory procedure when installing a replacement injector.

There are two possible ways to look at this situation. On one hand, you could say that Bombardier manufacturing is lacking--it cannot make the E-TEC injector very consistently. However, we really do not know the magnitude of the variation from injector to injector. It could very well be that the E-TEC injector is made with as much (or more) precision as any other injector in the world. The coefficients may simply be a new level of refinement which Bombardier has introduced in order to gain even greater precision and control. If that is the case, it is a very innovative solution to an overall manufacturing and assembly operation.

If we assume this more positive view of the E-TEC injector and its coefficients, then we see that Bombardier undertakes individual testing and calibration of each injector, and then provides compensation for the individual characteristics of each injector in the engine control system. The end result is likely to be more precise total control and a better engine product.

It would be very interesting to hear from some one who has more insight into the E-TEC injector and its calibration coefficients. Perhaps we could learn more about the manufacturing process and calibration, although, on second thought, these things might be considered trade secrets and not likely to be divulged.

I also think that Bombardier has made the first really modern electronically controlled engine by using field updates of the firmware in the engine as a means to make improvements in older engines. If sos's observation is correct, Mercury dealers apparently lack any ability to install field updates into the engine controllers of any Mercury engine. This is the exact opposite of the situation with Bombardier. As far as I can tell, all Bombardier dealers are expected to be able to install field updates into the firmware of the E-TEC engines they are servicing. Updates of the firmware are made on a regular basis in order to improve the product.

Again, you can spin this two ways. One direction is to say that Mercury doesn't need any updates because they got it right the first time. The counter direction to that is to say that there is always room for improvement, and being able to make field updates encourages the engineers to keep refining the product. This is particularly true with anything based on software. The UNIX operating system has been in development for 30 years, for example, and there are still patches and improvements developed for it.

One of the services that Tony Brucato provides is injector cleaning. He provides a data sheet that shows how each injector performed before, and then after cleaning. his data shows that there is considerably variation between one injector to the next. (keep in mind that these are injectors that are going into Mercury engines)
My guess is that there is a normal amount of variation from one injector to the next, even when brand new. Clearly this variation could cause some performance difference from one cylinder to the next and I suppose the bean counters have figured out just now much differential is tolerable. This is pure speculation on my part, but maybe "Bomb" is trying to provide a better means to control this variation so as to improve overall performance and lower their warranty costs from injector related failures.
Injector performance is pretty critical as it determines whether or not the proper amount of fuel is delivered at the proper time. If an injector is not performing properly it is similar to a plugged main jet in a carb.

I have always thought of you as rather electro-mechaniclly oriented. Maybe your just trying to kiss some Mercury a$$;<] to eliminate the possibility of being accused of being paid by Evinrude. Oh yeah that guy is gone.

Manufacturing of a device such as these elctro-mechanical injectors consists of: A nozzle with a toleranced orifice, a piston pump containing a piston with some sort of seal ring both having tolerance and a cylinder honed to a toleranced diameter. All this is electro-magnetically driven by a coil wound on very high speed equipment to a toleranced resistance with wire that was manufactured to some tolerance.

In order to negate all these tolerances there must be somewhere to plug in these offsets. If you want the out come to be a Evinrude instead of a Mercury.

Off topic, but here goes.

Nothing new about injector variables. Injector matching and or adjustment have been done since I was a puppy in the stone age. I'm speaking of purely mechanical fuel injectors, mostly diesel but gasoline also on some Mercedes Benz engines.

Back in the day one method we used to attempt to optimize engine performance was to match injector performance to the degree possible. This was accomplished by mounting the injectors for an engine on a test stand and calibrating the injectors to operate as similarly as possible within the constraints of the existing technology of the day.

When it was necessary to change/replace injectors we would often find it necessary to test several more injectors than found in a set in order to get good matches or matching injector performance. The same methodology was used when installing injector tip sets.

All those tuning tricks we learned are undoubtedly obsolete today but we thought we were pretty hot stuff back then.

And there you have it.

Merc field reps can update ECUs if needed. Dealer no.

And for information. The Merc ECU is the most powerfull ECU in the industry. The auto industry is just now starting to look at the ECU version that Merc used 5 years ago.

And it does have "learn while you run" processes.

I would be very surprised if the 75hp and 90hp were truly identical in their technical specifications.

There has been discussion of this in the past re: the old 40 and 50hp Evinrudes (as well as many others), and in every instance, it turned out that there was more different than just the carburetors.

If you think about it, it makes sense. Simply placing a smaller carburetor (or electronically reducing the amount of fuel and air sent to the cylinder), will not result in an efficiently running engine at all rpms. You need to alter the size of the combustion chamber or it will not run right. Also, the intake and exhaust manifolds need to be modified.

Also, and perhaps most importantly, modifying the fuel map for increased peak horsepower on an electronically controlled engine (of any kind), always results in negative side effects. As someone who spent years toying with the paramaters on my electronically controlled Honda Prelude via an in-car laptop, I can speak with a little experience on this.

There is no "free lunch" when it comes to engine power. You can tinker with the fuel/air mixture, but all it does is reshape the torque curve. Overall, the engine's performance does not really "improve". It simply changes. You can gain low end torque or high end power, but not both at the same time. There is no engine out there where WOT is not exactly that: Wide Open Throttle. When the throttle is wide open, and you have the correct amount of fuel being injected, that is the MOST power that the engine is capable of. You can't fight physics. An engine is a pump. The more air it pumps, the more power it produces. You can't make it capable of pumping more air through a few keystrokes.

The worst side effect of all, of course, is increased wear and tear on the engine. I ruined the engine in my Honda by messing around too much with the fuel map and timing. It turns out that the same conditions that gave it a more concentrated power band, also increased the stress on the rings and bearings (big surprise). After a year of abuse, it was blowing more smoke than a Cheech and Chong movie.

If your goal is to get more power out of your engine, I suggest making PHYSICAL modifications. Then, and only then, will there be any potential for overall gain through electronic modification.

Of course, I would NEVER do that on a brand new E-Tec that was still under it's warranty.

Re physical differences and software differences:

The Honda V-TEC motors are a good example of this. Honda gets the greater horsepower from a physical difference--a second set of cam lobes which are switched into operation. The irony is that software controls this. On several of their engines the added V-TEC feature is physically there, but it is made inoperable by software changes. Those sorts of engines would seem to be to be the most ripe for plucking the forbidden fruit of a software re-programming. All you might have to do is change one bit in memory from a zero to a one, and you would change the engine into one with more horsepower.

It seems obvious to me, but I have never seen anyone else ask: if the 75 and 90, or 200 and 225 are the same mechanically, and only differ in electronic tuning, why aren't they the same price?

Because price is not only a function of cost to produce, it is also a function of value to the customer. And there is also maybe competition - do all the manufacturers break out from the same basic block into the same set of end models?

I don't mean to discredit what you're saying jimh. But I've worked on a lot of Honda motors over the years and I've never seen one that had the provisions for the variable valve timing, but did not have it activated in the computer (unless there had been aftermarket modifcation, or electrical failure). The added complication of such a technology increases the cost of producting these engines considerably.

I think this same logic can be applied to outboard motors. Manufacturers are not putting the physical technology into engines to produce extra horsepower and then simply electronically disengaging it to sell it to a lower-end market. I know that sometimes it SEEMS like it might be cheaper for them to do it this way, but I have serious doubts.

For a while you used to see this type of thing with wiring in automobiles. But only with the wiring. For example, a car that had was available with air conditioning would have the wires in the wiring loom strung to the appropriate location for attaching the components and switches, even if A/C was not ordered. But never would you find an A/C pump under the hood, or a disabled A/C switch on the dash. But as the price of copper has gone up, and automation has improved, auto manufacturers have found it worth the effort to omit unneeded wiring. When you're making hundreds of units a day, the little things add up.
