It appears I have crazing on my 2006 Montauk 170 cc windshield. Do you think this is this something that is covered under the factory warranty? -Seth |

Did you hit something? Is the crazing around the screws? and If it is less than a year old I would think so. |

I didn't hit anything. The crazing could have been there when I took delivery. I didn't notice it until using the boat. The crazing is on the front port side just above the black strip along the bottom of the windshield. I can post a picture or two if that would help. -Seth |

Ask your dealer.

Dealer asked. He has photos of the crazing. He called and told me he is still waiting to hear from Boston Whaler. We shall soon see... |

Dealer better give you a new windshield. If not pay for the new one and stick the old one in a paper bag...light it on fire....lay it on their doorstep...ring the doorbell and run away. I did that once with a VW Jetta. Man the look on their faces...PRICELESS! |

Hi guys, I am not sure if it is a warranty situation or not, but here is what can cause crazing: petroleum based solvents! Laquer thinner of course will eat it up, but lesser cleaners like 3m adhesive cleaner, acetone, "pre-kleeno", Wax and grease remover, and a multitude of other seemingly harmless cleaners will cause the crazing...I know, I have messed up quite a few myself over the years. A pioneer in the acrylics business, Henry Happel told me that naptha works, and does not cause crazing, but I have not tried it yet. The windshield can be water sanded with 1200 and buffed to remove scratches, gouges, etc. But the crazing and checking is to deep to repair. Ken Gearin |

For the record I have never used anything except warm water and soap on the windshield. Maybe windex but I doubt it. -Seth |

How fast do you tow the boat? I believe that some of my crazing on the windshield is caused by the force of wind on the plexi during towing...that puppy is probably flexing pretty good...and when a beetle or dragon fly hits it...well. Just a thought. Dave |

My 2003 160 Dauntless windshield has quite a bit of crazing and pitting. After a lot of wondering about this mystery problem, I finally figured out it was the spray-on sunscreen, both from application overspray and from leaning against the plexiglass after application. Buffing it out will be one of this year's projects, but not one I've gotten to yet. |

Some things are worth waiting for. The new windscreen finally came in from BW last week so I dropped the boat off yesterday at York Harbor Marine for the switch. I picked her up today and the boat looks brand new again! Steve at York Harbor Marine gives customer service a good name. A rare find indeed these days. -Seth |

Never use ANY cleaners on the plexi windshields. Windex is a no-no, and so is boat-soap. Don't use stiff bristled brushes either. A simple wet cloth is all that should ever be used. They do sell special cleaners for plexi and lexan, which obviously you can use. But they're expensive and not really necessary. |

My windshield on a 1999 Dauntless was replaced under warranty for crazing. No problem. I found that a few months later the new windshield was crazed. I've chosen to live with it and it has not worsened in the past seven years. I've never used anything but car washing soap and water on the windshield. I believe minor crazing is the nature of the beast. Probably caused by vibration or repeated bumping. Thus far the crazing has not interfered with my boating pleasure and is a minor annoyance. Windex on plexi--very--very bad. That will certainly craze a plexi windshield. |

Thanks for the advice. I will certainly not use ANYTHING on my new windscreen to cleanse it. The crazing I had was not near any stress points or due to cleaning products that I used. Again, it could have been there when I took delivery as I noticed it that same season. It was very hard to see unless you were looking for it. Any who, the images I sent the dealer, and they sent to BW, proved to be enough evidence for it to be covered under warranty. There were no questions asked. -Seth |
