I saw Mick Baldwin (run past the fence )today go by in a blur in a modified black 15 center console with a Yamaha 130 on the back.

Mick - how fast does that thing go with the hull modifications? Do you have a crash helmet? Are you insane?

Dark blue, not black.

Fast.

Yes.

Probably.

Kidding aside, it was funny running by you yesterday. I figured I see something on this site about it.

As you saw, the boat is in a usable/extremely close to completion state. Her maiden voyage was last Monday night, just before dusk.

I haven't posted any pictures because she's still without a rub rail. I've got a composite rail with stainless insert that I'm not exactly thrilled with. I may end up using it, but right now I'm figuring the cost and difficulty of installing a Sapele rub rail. We didn't fill and fair the area under the rub rail as well as the rest of the boat, so once it's on there'll be pictures up.

I haven't posted performance numbers for two reasons. I'm not able to hold her wide open by myself and trimmed out. I need a foot throttle so I can manipulate the wheel, jackplate, and trim without taking a hand off of the steering wheel. The modifications have made the chine walk manageable, but I've got to learn to manage it. Furthermore, I've hit the rev limiter (6200rpm) with a 14X24" Yamaha Drag. At about 10% slip, you can do the math. So, I've got a foot throttle on order and I'm moving up to a 26" pitch prop for top end.

I hate to even use the boat without it being complete, but after 2.5 years, I just can't keep the thing out of the water. And with a 40 - 42mph she's just a blast run. I'm thrilled with the result.

Be on the lookout for a full writeup complete with pictures and performance data.

Mick

That should read, "And with a 40 - 42mph cruise speed she's just a blast run"

I can’t wait to read the write up and check some pics out. Sounds real nice. I have always loved the Yamaha 130. Had one on an 18 Angler for 10 years. A bullet proof motor. You are singing right along.

Mick,

Sorry if you didn't want me to post anything yet. You went by so fast (and I guess I was going 35 in the other direction - coming back from Capers Island) that I couldn't tell the color.

That was the first I had seen of the boat since it was upside down having the modifications done to it years ago.

If you ever need a 15 to run around while you are waiting on yours to be finished mine is just sitting under a house at Toler's Cove collecting dust. I'm only using it about once a month or so right now. Although I'm not sure you could enjoy an F60 after being used to a 130 Yamaha. That's the same engine on my dad's 18 Dauntless.

P.S. when you do post pictures please have the same girl that's laying out by your pictures of the 18 Outrage pulled up on a beach pose in the pics with a bikini on as it will make them more interesting for sure.

Mick, also patiently waiting... dnh, do you have a GPS top speed with your F60? Also, which prop are you running? Thanks. zot.

You should be able to do more than 42mph, I use to move the trim switch to the steering wheel(find a steering wheel with wide spokes and drill them out and mount the trim and jack plate buttons on the spokes now your hands stay on the wheel) and used my thumb for pushing the button, I would also rig a kill switch, make sure your foot throttle has a strong return spring...good luck be safe

The cruise seems right with a 24 pitch. I cruise at 40 mph at 4000rpms with a 24 raker. When he puts on the 26 then he will have his fast and efficient cruise. You right on about the trim on the wheel. I have also seen them put on the helm with a little switch coming out to move up and down while keeping both hands on the wheel. You might start getting in the relm of solid motor mounts on that thing.

My 15 does right at 40mph and I have the 15 something that it came with dont remember. The morons that mounted it mounted it too low. I just haven't had time to get it raised.

Now, on the other hand, my 21 Outrage goes 54mph with the Mercury Enertia 21 pitch and I got it raised up nicely.

dnh, that sounds right. The diameter is what I had in question. Mine came stock with a 10.25 X 15 I think, black coated SS from Yamaha. TWC sold me a Turbo Hot Shot that I am not sure of the pitch or diameter anymore, but it is polished SS and seems to be doing the trick. Have not had conditions for WOT, light load and finally a GPS. Just curious. Thanks. zot.

I mounted this jackplate switch from TH Marine to adjust the jackplate without taking my hand off the wheel or throttle. I can reach it with my fingers while holding the wheel.

Still waiting for the video and top speed;o)

Good luck,

Len, that should work fine for you. The way I interpretted the previous posts are the way that we are running the Speed Skiffs. Drilling out, or factory cut-out wheels, allow your thumb to operate the switch from the topside of the wheel with a single thumb. I think this will apply most when you are going FAST and turning LEFT!

Please don't paint the bottom of your 15 with something like "TILT"!!!

And I really like the reply regarding the KILL Switch! zot.

Oh, and if you find that you need a Hot Foot throttle assembly, let me know. www.glenwood.com. Have a ball!

The foot throttle came in today, and I should have the rub rail either Friday or Monday.

I use a dual turn signal style trim and jack plate control. coupled with the foot throttle, I'll have full control of the boat without releasing from the wheel.

Here's what I'm using for trim and jack plate controls (plus, a bonus console sneak preview).

Bluejay, you also mentioned solid motor mounts...

...they give your butt a bit of a rumble at launch, but I kind of like it.

To bad you cut out the console for the controls, now you want to use the foot control, will you not have a hole in the console now? What about mounting the two paddles on the steering wheel (on wheel spokes paddles outward) instead of the column? Would like to see more pictures of the entire set up Thanks...good luck
runpasthefence posted 06-13-2008 12:09 AM ET (US)     Profile for runpasthefence  Send Email to runpasthefence
The foot throttle is strictly a throttle control mechanism. Shifting the motor will still be through the control box at the console. Furthermore, I want to be able to use the control box for throttle control on longer trips where the foot control would be tedious. Also, the foot throttle is nearly impossible to use when standing.

There are (expensive) products available that allow you to use a semi-conventional control box and a foot throttle interchangeably and/or simultaneously. My solution will be to have three control cables running from the console to the motor. Two will control the engines throttle assembly. I will simply connect which control I choose to use before I launch.

The trim and jack plate controls are attached using the screws used to hold the steering helm's dust cover on. The controls are designed to be mounted this way, and they are at my fingertips with my hands on the wheel.

Ya, Some pictures would be very cool!

"EVIL 15" sure sounds like the correct name, if your going to name her.

Hope the final touches go well, Get.er.don!
