On a recent visit to my marine mechanic I noticed him checking out a 40 HP Mercury on a stand. He had a rubber coupling slipped over the exhaust of the prop to suppress the noise because of nearby homes in the area. The rubber coupling was one that is used in plumbing to connect metal pipe to PVC and the one he was using was a 4" X 3" with a PVC plug in the end of it. I couldn't believe how quiet it ran with this attached to the prop. I thought this may be a problem with exhaust gases backing up on the engine but he assured me it was not. He is a certified marine mechanic and has a great reputation for service so I feel like he knows what he's doing. Have any of you Guy's/Gal's seen this used in other places or perhaps use it yourself?? http://s298.photobucket.com/albums/mm265/sebash4/noise%20suppression/ |

The PVC is a good idea. I usually stuff a rag in the center of the prop and run a bungee cord around the lower unit. The noise is muffled by the rag even though most of the exhaust is routed out the upper port and is much mellower. Joe |
