The drought hasn't dried up the beaver activity on Balus Creek. They are taking the rapid-growth plants down and making a dam right by my dock. s156.photobucket.com/albums/t23/superdave_gv/habitat/?action=view& current=dambeavers002.jpg s156.photobucket.com/albums/t23/superdave_gv/habitat/?action=view& current=dambeavers004.jpg In this location on Lake Lanier, the water level is down over 7 feet. The entire lake is still down around 15 feet or so which grounds the dock. The pooling "up-creek" in the second pic is great to see, but at full pool the creek is about 4-5 times wider than shown. It is fun to see that these beavers, my former aquatic adversaries, are still around and up to something. I say adversaries because, when the water is up, they will swim by the dock while I'm fishing and tail-slap near me when I am canoeing. I have also noticed an increase in the number of deer that explore my backyard. |

is it all that important to keep releasing water from the lake ? cant they stop the flow at night when its not needed as much and start it during the day,, i don't live around there so i'm not sure of the reason why they let it get so low and why have they kept it that way |

Good to see some of the animal life adapting. Can't say the same for the freshwater mussels we had. Did you see the alligator they picked up not far from you? Also - there's a Bald Eagle nest on one of the islands off of Sunrise Cove. I've been meaning to get up there with my kids. |

That alligator dust up was hilarious. The bald eagle sounds great. Been seeing a lot of hawks. This drought on Lanier is killing me. The yard and house are looking a lot better though so it's a good trade-off. It's acorns banging on the tin roof season right now. Planning on doing a Fall color cruise up at Lake Burton on Oct 25th. Still not sure about Nov 1st on Lanier, but, to be honest, it's a can't miss. Would like to and may hitch a ride if most folks are using trolling motors. I still have Kevin's pic on my wall and work cell phone from when Joe let George and I tag along. Sunrise on Lanier is hard to beat. A lake that big smooth as glass and such a big sky. Guess I can't stay mad long. |

Lake Burton is in my top 10 most beautiful places on earth. Mountain sides down to the lake and so peaceful. Sorry about the mess at Lanier. I have a lot of friends up there and they're all fed up with it... sounds like you have a "lake's half full" attitude which is hard to maintain. Hope it gets back to normal someday... sjohnson |

Hey the "i" link instead of "s" is good because it's just the image. Is that what you were fixing or do the other links not work for you? The http:// is optional according to UBB directions but I'm curious if your browser didn't link. Thanks |

Maybe this is a little more CBS Sunday Morning for the benefit of the urban crowd as opposed to hardcore Whaler/boating, but here's the Beavers progress so far on Balus Creek: Progress! Nice pool and a boisterous waterfall sound: Closeup of what the Beavers are clearing: Up the creek view. If they had been a little more ambitious the dock would "have water" - haha http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t23/superdave_gv/habitat/ dambeavers009.jpg Towards the main body of Lake Lanier: |
