I found a site that is auctioning government owned assests called govdeals.com. Of interest to me are the Boston Whalers that are being sold in Maryland.
These are police and DNR boats that are being decommissioned and selling for around 3K to 5K. Some with engines, others without.

I took off early from work today and drove for a couple of hours to check the boats out before actually bidding on them. I am glad I did.

The DNR Staff at the Matapeake is first class. They stopped what they were doing to show me the boats that are available and the ones that will be coming available soon. Let me say, it pays to look before you bid. Granted, these are commercial quality Whalers, they are also well used.

I checked out 6 boats, all were what I would call project boats. Good deals - perhaps yes, however, there will be work (in some cases at lot of work) to get them into something that is serviceable. Still for the right person, this is a place to look for a unique boat.

So check out govdeals.com, it is interesting. In my case, I am passing and will continue in my search for a really nice mid to late 1980s Montauk. It's out there somewhere...

I've found the best resource for government liquidation auctions are the sites run by the United States General Services Administration, www.govsales.gov and www.gsaauctions.gov .

These are reliable sites run by the federal government and are used by state and federal agencies across the nation. Boston Whalers turn up quite often on these sites, but they're obviously "well used" to say the least. The biggest frustration for me is always that there seem to be very few good items located out here in the PNW. But, that, I'm sure, is a factor of our relatively government-free life out here. It's a tradeoff I'll happily accept.

Thanks for the links.

I do not know about the relationship with the State of Maryland and Govdeals.com. However, that is the "company" Maryland is using to auction off their Police boats. It seems reliable and reputable.
