I am spending this beautiful fall weekend cleaning up the boat and getting it ready for winter storage. It seems like a shame to waste the 78-degree summer-like temperatures, but the time has come. Thanks to the relentless recording keeping of my NAVMAN 3100 FUEL instrument, I can give you the following data on my boating season: Seasonal Data 2008 Average fuel economy = 1.98-MPG This was a good year for boating for us. We used the boat more than last year, were underway longer and went farther. We used more gas, too, but we got better fuel economy, thanks to a late-season boost from the E-TEC motor we were testing. It is fun keeping track of all this data. I never realized how much additional fun the NAVMAN 3100 FUEL instrument could provide, besides its real-time fuel economy measurement. If there is more good weather ahead this fall, I will have to rely on my friends for a boat ride. Dave? Pat? Jeff? How about the rest of you northern boaters--are you still in the water and ready to go? |

Jim, I am heading out to do some boating in Estes Park, Colorado next weekend. The mountains have a lot of snow already and it is getting very chilly out here even at the base of the mountains. Like last year, my boating never really ends. I will fish and boat in the rivers all winter as long as I can find a ramp that will let me in. I would be glad to give anyone a winter ride out here in CO if they pull through. Cheers, Matt |

Depending on Sunday's weather, this may have been BW1's last splash of the season. It was a whole lot nicer today than it was last weekend during the N. Mich. Inland waterway cruise from Mullett Lake to Alanson and back. http://s121.photobucket.com/albums/o226/Martha49682/Fall%202008/ Last weekend's cruise on the Crooked River. |

Sorry to hear about you northern boaters. Nick (Tohsgib) and I just had a mini rendezvous at beercan island today. 85 degrees and sunny people were swimming in the 75 degree water. If any of you need a break in the winter I'm sure one of us can help with a boat ride if you make the trip down. Good luck with your winterizing chores. Len |

I am still in my slip, and was out on the windy North Atlantic this morning. Caught about 30 mixed fish, nothing big, but glad to be holding onto the season. As a matter of fact, I will likely be out on Barnegat Bay tomorrow. I will probably get three more weekends out of this year, before drydock until April. |

Well I put my 22 to bed for the winter last weekend. Looks like lake Erie would have been a great place to be this weekend. One good thing is I have my 11 ready to take down to Fl. in 28 days. I plan in using it this winter when I can get there. So If you plan an outing this winter at beer can let me know I will be a Ruskin. |

I hoisted my Montauk last weekend; and the big boat just got put on blocks yesterday (time for new bottom paint). I put ~400 hrs on the Montauk (main and kicker). That is the most I think I will ever be able to put on my Montauk in one season. (I'll get some stats on my fuel consumption, but it'll be estimate based on fuel receipts.) I commuted to work 4 days a week from June - Sept. and it was incredibly great way to start the day at work. I usually went ~15 knts; and it took exactly 35-45 mintues one-way from enigne "on" to engine "off". I had a lot of "no wake" motoring, about 15 minutes. Getting to the marina was 2-3 mintues, walking to work was ~5-7 minutes. The worst weather was a 30 knot breaze that I had to take on the forward port quarter. A lot of banging around. Needless to say, the engines need some a good tune up. Hopefull winter projects are new wiring, and new GPS. (I got the bow wiring replaced last winter season; and I was suprised the old suff even worked.) |

From northern Illinois. Nancy and I are still planning for more boating. We have been out on our little Rock River with friends both Friday and Saturday afternoon. Many beautiful trees along the river and people in various stages of preparing for winter. The water has a bit of chill in it already and the consequence is easy clean-up, no algae. We go out about 3 and stay out through the sunset, so the feel of Indian Summer is there. Marvelous. Comes with cheese, crackers, beer or wine. |

Here in Connecticut we still have a few weeks to go. Yesterday saw 75 degrees and a boat ride to assist my 8 year old as she worked on her school project. She needed to find pictures of nouns so off we went to gather pictures of Islands,Tugs, and Lighthouses a great day on the water as the GPS passed 3000 miles thusfar this season. |

As of two weeks ago I put 130 hrs on the Montauk for about 1100 miles. I don't have electronic monitoring of fuel consumption but assume I averaged about 4-5 mpg. Last weekend I put about 10 more hours on the boat. My wife shot this picture of me from the dock. http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc264/sapple2/Scott%20in%20boat/ IMG_3467c.jpg Still nice weather here in Virginia. We plan to go out for a few hours this afternoon. |

I'm curious if those like jimh who keep careful records, later apply for a refund of road-use fuel taxes paid on fuel used in your boat. (I don't use enough fuel to make it worth my time keeping receipts.) |

Like Chopbuster, I'll be boating in NJ bays and the Delaware river right through the fall and into the winter. Had very good striper fishing last year right up to Christmas week and even into January! Although, I'll probably make the trek down to Florida in February again for some warm weather R&R ... Brian |

Well, I put my Montauk up last weekend but I couldn't pass up this great weather. It was 82 degrees at St. Joe, MI today and the lake was flat. It was great to get some sun this late in the season. After getting to the launch ramp, it took 2 minutes to winterize my E-Tech. |

Saturday; saw stiff breeze at 15knts from the south with bright blue skies and 73 degrees. We had some friends in town from Wisconsin, took them in the Conquest 295 across Raritan bay into NY harbor. Got some great pic's by the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, Statue of Liberty, South Street Sea Port, Brooklyn Bridge then up the Hudson River past the USS Intrepid, Grant's Tomb, George Washington Bridge it was a nice trip and the trees where just starting to change. This was thier first time to NYC and it was a great way to show them the City. My boats in the water until the end of November, so a few more weekends then down to boating and fishing in Port Charlotte, FL. |

This is one of the reasons I wish Whaler made a pilothouse boat. We will use the C-Dory the whole winter. The Wallas heater and stove will keep the pilothouse warm and it will be nice to putter along, even if it is below freezing out. The Whaler will be long since put away. If only Whaler made a pilothouse boat in the low to mid 20 foot range... |

Although I truly miss the Northeast and the Jersey Shore, I love being able to boat year round in the southeast. One of the things I enjoy about the Atlanta area is we get the four seasons but the weather remains mild enough to boat and fish year round. Freshwater striper fishing on Lanier is great but I do miss the salt air. Taking one last trip to the panhandle of Florida next week before Red Snapper season closes on Nov. 1. The wife and I were down there 2 1/2 weeks ago and did great fishing. Then it will be Lanier all winter for Stripers. This is my favorite time of year on Lanier. Great fishing and no boat or PWC traffic. Then Hopefully the Gulf Coast whaler crew will have another Homossassa gathering in Feb or March. Last year was a blast and I hope to talk some more of the Lanier crew into the drive down. If you are in the Atlanta area this winter and miss whalering, drop me a line and maybe we can hook up out on Lanier. |

Tom, you can only get the Federal Excise tax of .183 cents per gallon on gasoline back if the boat is used for commercial fishing. I only know Washington rules for the State Motor Fuel tax of .375 cents per gallon. Yes you can apply for a refund, but they are going to apply sales tax to it if they are refunding the Motor Fuel tax. Example: You paid 4.75 a gallon for marina gasoline. The state will take the 4.75 and deduct .183 Fed and .375 state and get 4.192 for the sales taxable amount. 4.192 times the sales tax rate of at least 8% only nets you back about .04 cents a gallon. If the price of fuel drops, you get more per gallon back because the Motor Fuel tax is fixed per gallon and the sales tax is a percentage. John |

This is as good a time as any to provide a hearty THANKS to ALL who have posted on the various columns within this website! After a 20 yr. hiatus from boating, I purchased a new 13' Sport to enjoy in several areas:(ocean~north county San Diego), Colorado river, (leaving for later this week), and lakes~Mead, Powell, etc. Since buying this "pocket rocket" in june, I've found your positive commentaries invaluable! I have bought a new camera which I hope to use for "fun boating experiences". I was able to outfit it with your advice on every level, saving me from a lot of grief by trying to "wing it" with dire consequences! I finally finished all of my installations, including a new towing boat cover, last week....again - thanks to you. My first installation was an AYHF meter with the following results: 1. Number of trips: 9. 2. Total Gallons of fuel used: approx. 7 2/3; (+/- 8.5%) 3. Miles traveled: A Bunch. 4. Miles per gallon: Beats Me! 5. Average length of trip: Just Enough! 6. Average cost per trip: Could Care Less! 7. Number of trips per week: I Forgot! 8. Value of boat: PRICELESS! * You can get a free AYHF meter by getting in your boat! (A-are, Y-you, H-having, F-fun). Happy & Safe Boating! Vayase |

I can't tell you exactly many hours in my Montauk this season but I'd guess at least 100 or so. Two weekends with the family having fun - Torch Lake is absolutely beautiful it is truely a must see location. The rest was spent walleye fishing in Lake Erie. It is not yet put away for the year. Fall Walleye should get good again in a couple of weeks and I'll be out as much as possible until there is ice on the water but I won't make the same mistake as I did last winter and attempt to break 1" ice just to get into open water. I spent too much time repairing gel coat last winter to do that again. |

JimH, Isn't there some way you can segregate replys for a thread like this one? Say,... keep Len, Nick, and all other BlueHair Floridians from crashing our Wake, as we mourn the death of another great season of boating? LOL. Len, Thanks again for a great outing last Christmas. My son and I still talk about it as one of the highlights of our "JimmyBuffet Christmas". I will put 10+ hours on the boat this weekend starting tonight, boating with a great group of guys between Honey Harbour and Sans Soucis in Southern Georgian Bay. it is an annual event where we boat, hike the crown lands, explore and catch up. Sharing the ups and downs of life. I'll put the boat away in mid November, when the marina calls to indicate the batteries are coming out of the forklift, and it is now or not at all. Safe boating to all, wherever it may be! Stuart |

I did not say a word! My boat will be coming out next week...for a quick wash and wax and back up on the lift until the next time it turns green. Did 4.5 trips to beercan which is mainly cruising 45-60 minutes each way. Filled it up and took a whopping 26.3 gallons which gives me an average of less than 4gph per fill. |

I had a very successful year with this 23 Conquest. We fished stripers, fluke, blues, seabass, with friends and family. We hauled it down to Cape Hatteras and fished the "Gulf Stream" for the first Mahi over the rail. We circled Manhattan Island with fellow CW'ers. We almost sunk it at the dock forgetting the plug for a night...had it been anything but a Boston Whaler. And now it is prematurely on my side yard getting it's first polishing and wax in nine years. This is a great boat! Joe |

Unlike past seasons I am not winterizing and have decided to heed the advice of our Florida bretheren and I am shipping her to Key West for the winter. I am looking forward to a 10 mile trip to the edge as opposed to a 80 mile trip!! |

I was fishing at Eagles Pass last weekend which can be a busy spot in the summer. Still too early to put the Montauk away. It was 28 deg on Wed morning when we launched in Lake Erie but before noon we had our limit of Walleye and Smallmouth bass. It is brisk this time of year but I would not miss any available free time on the water for anything (don't tell my wife). Plus, my 13 year old son is still begging for a couple days off school to get on the water again before winter hits. School is important but getting on the water is an education for the inquisitive sponge brain of his. |

Tom and others in the Pacific Northwest are the beneficiaries of a micro-climate which creates a little temperate rain forest for them. While we're at a lower latitude, we don't get that moderation from the Pacific Ocean. Boating in November through March is for the diehard or commercial boater on the Great Lakes. For us the weather period right ahead is very dangerous. The worst maritime disasters on the Great Lakes have all occurred on the 9th through the 11th of November. --The Armistice Day Storm, November 11, 1940: 5 vessels, 66 lives lost; --The Edmund Fitzgerald, November 10, 1975: 29 lives; --The Great Storm of 1913, November 9-10, 1913: 19 vessels, over 250 lives lost. Also lost in November: --The Carl Bradley, November 18, 1958: 33 lives lost. If you want to go boating on the northern Great Lakes in November, be very careful what day you pick. |
