My daughter brought her new man over to the island for Thanksgiving. After feasting on Sunday, we slept in until 8:30 am on Monday morning and enjoyed a somewhat stilted breakfast as he and I were both trying to get to know each other.

Finally, I declared we should go look for some salmon and they agreed. The weather was cool, the skies were crying and the wind was threatening but we went anyway.

The trusty Outrage awaited and we made our way over to my latest discovery, just beyond the naval base in the mouth of a small river. The weather stayed cool but we dressed for it, the rain became a mist and the tide was lo lo when the fish started attacking.

My daughter, still learning about how to use a downrigger, hooked the first one, a small coho that she got near the boat before it danced off the hook. Then I brought in a similar sized spring which I refused to let in the boat, romoving the hook while it lay in the net at the side of the whaler. They could look over my shoulder as I talked to the little guy and told him he was going back for next year.

Her boyfriend caught two and she brought one in to the boat but all were released for next year. A 10 pound salmon produced little meat in October 2008 but will be a monster in July 2009!

Bottom line: I got watch the two of them together and confirm that he knew how to treat my daughter properly and I got to know my future son in law by going fishing in my Whaler.

Priceless.

Sounds like my plan. My twins just turned 4, so I have some time. Some day - any fellas interested in my girls need to go either whalering or sailing with me. I'll take some cinder blocks for the rejects ;0)

I think the first thing I'm going to do when my 8 & 9 year old daughters start to date is show their respective dates my gun cabinet. Then, we'll go fishing. On the Whaler will be a bag of sakrete quick set concrete placed so it can be seen. Ah, the power of suggestion!

My daughter just turned 17, I took her and new boy friend out fishing this summer with a couple of other kids that had gone out with us before. First rule PFD's on while running, but her boy friend was to macho and said he was a good swimmer, well I didn't want to upset my daughter so I let it go. Needless to say the last person in my boat didn't dog the cockpit door, and he must have been leaning on it when we went thru a large wave.....well he went right out the back of the boat at 27MPH. My Conquest 295 take while to turn around, couple of minutes later he was safe back in the boat, he learned his lesson, but really learned mine that day.
