Hi. I may need to replace the control cable on my 2004 170 Montauk. The throttle control is fine up to 2000 RPM, but it is very difficult to slowly throttle up--it is like all or nothing. Spoke to my Mercury dealer and he said that you cannot lube the cables and would need to replace them.

How involved is [the replacement of throttle cable]? How much [will it cost to replace the throttle cable]?.

May as well do the throttle and shifter cable at the same time. Not to difficult to do yourself. Take pictures of the connections before you take them apart. Pull the new cables in when you pull the old ones out or at least tie a strong string to the old cable so you have something to pull the new cable back through. Probably around 200 at the dealer around 60 if you do it yourself. I purchased new cables this year for 27 each. Takes less than an hour if you know what you are doing. You will need to adjust the throttle and shifter after the new cables are installed use the old cable adjustments as a guideline.

Thanks Fishmore. I have a strong nylon cord permanently run through the tunnel. I installed it when I changed the transducer in case I ever need to draw anything additional through.

A new throttle cable should probably cost less than $75. There are different grades of cable available. I would replace the cable with the premium-grade cable. The labor involved can vary depending on how difficult it is to reach the helm throttle lever attachment point.

Routing the cable through the rigging tunnel should not be difficult. I would try to guide the cable into the tunnel in such a way that it does not become intertwined with other wires and cables. Sometimes a pull wire which has been used to pull other cables will become intertwined with them. It is better if the cable lays in the tunnel without being enveloped with other cables.

I am quite surprised that the cable on a 2004 Boston Whaler boat has become so worn that it is difficult to use. Generally remote throttle and shift cables have a much longer useful service life.

Hi Jim

I am not certain they need replacing, but I will try and try out a new Whaler and see the difference before I fork out my hard earned cash.

Maybe I just need to get used to it
