I am looking for the advice of the group's good experiances.

I may be buying my next Whaler (an Outrage.) It has already been pulled and will very soon be winterized (before I am ready to talk "serious turkey")

So while I can visually examine everything and look at service records, a test ride before the Spring may not be a practical request.

Is an escrow amount common pending Spring operation with my mechanics inspection???

If yes. what is typical amount or percentage to hold in escrow?

Any specific escrow companys with good recomendations from you all??

Another item is the boat needs serious TLC to clean it up. Heavy crud under seats and center console and a surprisingly dirty, oil filmy areas below the deck's stern hatches. What would be a reasonable negotiating discount for my elbow grease to make it shine?

Other recomendations and good experiances are welcome.

Thanks, Ed

Ed, it's completely up to you and the seller what kind of deal you make. As a seller, I would have a problem holding the boat for someone who might or might not buy it in the spring, unless there's something in it for me. Maybe you could work out an option to buy - put down some money, maybe a couple of hundred bucks or so. If you end up not buying it, you split it with the seller; if you do buy, the whole thing becomes a down payment. Whatever you do, get it in writing.

If you are serious tell him you will go for a ride and buy it based on it running good and everything working. Doubt the person wants to wait all winter to get his money,

I agree with Whalerdog - offer to pay for re-winterization if you do not purchase the boat. You're going to have to winterize it again anyway if you do buy it.

When you do the test drive, bring a nice coffee mug and a thermos (plus a clean mug for him). If he's warm and happy in the parking lot at the end while you make final negotiations, it is a good thing for you.

Re: the cleanup - You can either just call it good or you could get a boatyard estimate for cleanup. Halve that estimate and use that as the price negotiation....although I probably wouldn't use this in negotiations unless I suspected that there was a problem (beyond owner neglect) that caused the mess in the first place.

Good luck!

Dave
