I know that jimh doesn't like surveys, so let's just call this one a personality assessment. I'm curious to know members' reactions to this little gem of a video I found on YouTube:

Wow, that is awful. Sure glad I didn't do anything stupid with my Dad's stuff when growing up. ;-)

If one listens carefully, you can hear dumbass dave say, I friggin made it that time, and, I spilled my beer, says it all does it not. ?

The only thing missing from this video are a couple of gators, now that would have been something to see.

He's being filmed by someone on a PWC. I think that says it all.

When I had my Alumacraft Lunker V-14, I had to do that to get into Two Boys Lake on the Chippewa flowage in northern Wisconsin among other places. I was after big bass and muskies. I doubt I could do that with my Dauntless 14. It's just too heavy.

I really don't see anything wrong with it, if you have a reason. I'm not sure of the reason they had to do it.

BTW elaelap, I'm able to make some really good personality assessments of the people who answered your query already. Especially hauptjm.

Nicely done.
My kind of folks.

Assuming the destination is worth it, I would seriously consider bringing my chain saw next trip.

Great video, and I agree that the hull color matches her bikini.

That's what happens when you let your kids borrow your boat, or anything else for that matter. Its because young people have a form of brain damage that resolves past the age of 30. Ultimately, looks like no harm done. Then again,we don't know what else may have happened that did not get filmed.

What exactly does that say?

I gave my Dodge pick-up to my son Nicko when he was 17. I bought the truck new and it had served me well for almost 10 years. It had about 180,000 miles--including several thousand miles towing Whalers--when I turned it over. I warned my kid to check the oil every time he filled it up, 'cause the truck was burning maybe a quart per month, and to make sure he kept his eyes on the water temperature gauge and kept the radiator filled, 'cause that needed to be done every now and then. Other than that, it ran like a clunky top.

Five or six months later I got a phone call from Nicko: "Dad, I'm up in the Sierra foothills; it's over 100 degrees out; your truck made some funny noises and black smoke poured out the hood; and now your truck won't go."

Well, I almost got pissed off, but then I remembered blowing the head gasket on my mother's Impala by driving it over southern California's Grapevine Pass in 100 degree weather at 90 mph when I was 18, so what could I say without being a hypocrite?

I won't even begin to list the nutty, sometimes dangerous things I did with my dad's cars and boats when I was a teenager.

Kids will do what kids will do--all we old farts can hope for is that they stay alive until they (sadly) outgrow their free-but-often-irresponsible spirits. The teens in the video could have been sitting around home with the curtains drawn, doin' some blow and watching daytime soaps or reality shows on the idiot box. Instead they were out in nature having an adventure and of course trying their honest best to drive their dad a little nuts, but that's okay...that's what we're here for.

What size whaler is that?

"You want me to tie that B$%&^ up to back of this thing" NOPE NOT NEEDED

hauptjm posted 11-13-2008 12:35 PM ET (US)     Profile for hauptjm
Maybe, I should have been more specific: they're being filmed by a gray-haired man on a PWC. A gray-haired man, on a PWC with a Video Camera. I always carry my video camera with me when I cruise my PWC. So much for kids at play!

Yes, I too did more stupid things as kid than a lot of people. Fishguts, you shouldn't try to read too many things into my statement. Folks might think you're being stereotypically judgemental.

The video looked like kids being kids. As mentioned, way better than on the streets doing drugs or stealing!!

I am definitely enjoying the CW members personality assessment. It would be a boring world other wise.

My first reaction was they were just scraping the bottom growth off. Just another day in the bayou.

Second thought...Beer, bikini clad women and hormones will usually produce entertaining moments.

Third thought..Someone's Son somewhere backed up to a log like that.

Fourth thought ..hope I passed the PA ;-0.

I agree with all of that. I'm expecting to have a kid in a few months and I already want to get rid of the T.V.

Later.

Reaction to the video, seen it before, thought the kids did a good job getting over the log safely.

Reaction to Tony's son and the truck story, been there, but I was mad.

I let my nephew use my old Sunbeam Alpine from my high school days. I also told him to check the oil every time he filled up. It would take a quart every other fill up or so. Well, he ran it out of oil but according to him, it was not his fault. He never filled it up, just put in 5 bucks every now and then, the jerk. A political career is in his future, the car is back in my barn.

Kids. Ya gotta love them.
When we first moved to our home on the river my then 14 year old son and his buddies wanted to take the 13ft. Whaler wakeboarding. "Sure, have fun" I said and off they went. I then waited for the call that I knew would come. Ring goes the phone. "Hello". "Dad"? "Yes Stuart". "We ran out of gas"
Fortunately they were only 100 yards up the river so they swam the boat home.

What attracted me to Whalers, in the first place, was their utility.

Would I do that? Pprobably not. But, it's nice to know one can, if need be.

Why are Whalers so popular with Law Enforcement/Rescue? I think that video pretty much explains it.

Whalers are the 4WD's (Real 4WD's) of the industry.

Cool! Boys will be boys. Spring opening day for Trout fishing we would run the boat up on the ice with only the motor left in the water, then we'd jump up and down to break the ice to get up the river. Now with three grown boys of my own, my wife's common remark is that "you don't want to know everything that they are doing" :)

PS. Man I still don't like Jet Skis - even more today after hearing what that bad man called a Whaler!

All the best,

David

Hmmmm...

Ask members here about me and where I take my Whaler.

I like.

Here's a photo of Mateobosch following me into a small, uncharted creek from an inland lake on an island in remote lake Nipigon....we're about 35 miles from nearest civilization/mainland.

Just imagine what we might have done if we were drinking... We might have tried to take Italy wakeboarding through that river.
