Does anyone know what TC-II oil is designed for? I know that TCW-3 oil is what all newer model otboards should use but I was told that the TC-II was used in older outboard engines. Could it be for air cooled engines??

Owner’s manuals for outboard motors made in 1992 or prior used to state that premium fuel was required for proper operation, because during that time, premium outboard motor fuel was manufactured containing additives that minimized the formation of deposits inside the engines. During those years, the best oil available was rated at TCW-2 and did not contain the detergents and carbon preservative ingredients that marine engine oil such as XD-30, XD-50, and XD-100 does today. The federal government ruled in the late 1990s that all grades of fuel were required to include identical additive ingredients, and the premium fuel requirement for outboard motors was discontinued.

If you still have some TC2-W outboard motor oil, it can still be used in a motor from 1992 or before. If you choose to use TC2-W oil in an older motor, Evinrude recommends addition of a product such as Carbon Guard to lessen carbon deposit formation. Be aware, however, that using TCW-2 oil in a motor that requires TCW-3 oil will void your warranty should any oil-related malfunction occur.

It's not worth using.

Plus, I wouldn't use it in an air cooled engine, it was not designed for air cooled. The "W" in the TC rating stands for water cooled. There is a difference. Primarily ash content.

My '57' antique Evinrude 7.5 called for HD-30 Motor oil. I wouldn't use that, on a bet, considering the fine oils out there today.

Which oil are we talking about: TC-II, TC2-W, or TCW-2?

Whatever you want to call it, isn't it the oil rating used prior to TCW-3, or TCW-III?

Jim,

It's the TC-II oil and I have about five gallons of it. It does not have a "W" in it.

So, is the oil 16 years old?

John

If it's that old, what is the question?

Would you take 15 year old aspirin?

TCW 2 was an oil that caused a condition called ring jacking. The oil caused carbon to built up around the rings which caused the rings to score the bore and become jammed in the the ports where they broke off. TCW 3 took care of these problems with a lot more detergent and the motors lasted a lot longer. Don't use TCW 2 unless the motor is not worth much or nothing at all . TC means two cycle and W means water cooled, alot different than air cooled. high sierra
