Today I headed out to the pier head in Grand Haven Michigan. To try to get out to there every time I am in town visiting my in-laws. In the summer the pier provides a great spot for sunsets and in the winter it provides a small chilling image into what the Lakes Freighters as out in the open water sailing through. Today was a rather calm day with 3-6 foot waves rolling and 15 - 20 mph winds. The pier was encased with ice as over the past 24 - 48hours the West Side of Michigan was hit with a nasty winter storm that I am sure provided huge seas. I tried to get out there yesterday to shoot waves as the winds were a sustained 35 - 40+mph but, due to the winds, blowing snow, and snow drifts downtown was closed to nonresidents.

Jeff - Great photos. We had a quick Nor'easter yesterday. Not too bad, 14" and only moderate drifts. I have already given up trying to keep the boat dug out. &^%$#. While sore from snowblowing and shoveling there is a silver lining. One town up north a bit got 28". Ouch! Happy holidays to you, Erin and Quintin! |

Jeff--great photos. Here in MN we're having an old fashioned Minnesota winter, the likes of which we haven't seen in many years. Another 5 inches coming tonight. Next week we're heading out to the Detroit area (in-laws) so I'll see what your weather is like too, I suspect it will be like that here. |

Aw Richard, that is not snow. Here is an image my wife shot while we were heading north along Lake Michigan yesterday to her grandparents. High winds, blowing 3' - 4' snow drifts, and sideways snow graced us for the 120 mile round trip. There is a major highway under that snow and a minivan about 50 - 60 ahead of me. Can you see it? http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=30047164&l=6ff47&id=1001793531 Phil, dscew, |

Jeff - Great shot from the car, but I want everyone to understand (and notice) that he's driving down a woods-lined portion of the road - the wind is probably not really blowing in that particular photo! I was out on Sunday: 5 degree temperature, 30+ MPH sustained wind and snowfall just under the intensity in Jeff's photo (you are likely seeing a lake-enhanced snowfall in that photo), with blowing and drifting. In fact, we were trying to make our way out to the new house and got the truck stuck in a 1/4 mile long drift that was more than 4' deep in places. Fortunately, I was planning to clear the driveway, so I had a 2-stage snowthrower in the back and we were able to clear a path BACK out of the road to a spot that the wind had scoured down to the road surface. Later, we encountered a road crew clearing a path through a drift that was higher than the top of my F-150 with 20' wheels. Over where Jeff was (in Ottawa County - closer to the lake) it was brutal - whiteout conditions over much of the area. Grand Rapids has more than 46 inches of snow in December - and we're expecting 6-8 inches before Christmas and some more over the weekend. The count for last week alone: I've pulled 5 cars out of ditches, Cleared the driveway (and the neighbors) 3 times (it needs it again this morning, but I didn't have the energy after clearing the drifted shut driveway at the new house last night), and my total fuel economy is a dismal 11 MPG because I've run it in 4 Wheel Drive more often than not. Where ever you are this Holiday Season - stay warm, be merry, and hug your family and friends extra tight. Happy Holidays, and best wishes to everyone for improved fortune and circumstances in 2009! |

Dave, You are right, the trees provided some relief from the snow. I have other images at home of driving through the open areas and you can not see much of anything but white. It was truly horizontal snow. We probably got 12 - 16 inches over the weekend. That was on top of the 12 - 24 that where already on the ground. Stinger23OR, |

Great stuff, Jeff...and the makings of another fine calendar. Happy Holidays to all, and stay warm back there! Minus 12 degrees after factoring in wind chill last night for the Bears/Packers game--the coldest home game in Bears history according to today's paper. And we're complaining about some snow dust on the hills and ice on our windows out here ;-) C'mon spring. Tony |

Tony--My son and his girlfriend went to that game. WOW! Crazy huh! We all went to the sports bar and stayed warm! The Bears were terrible but won. Go figure! Right now we just got another 4" of snow with more coming and |

I hope your kid wasn't one of the shirtless five with B-E-A-R-S painted on their shivering chests, fourdy. Of course, if one of them had been your son's girlfriend, it might have made that tedious, blunder-filled game more interesting. Go Lions! Tony |

No, My kid isn't that crazy. But, After the game, he and the girl packed up and drove all night to Appleton, WI for Christmas with her parents. Hope he can make it home. I guess you know that the Lions could go winless if they lose next week. An embarrassment almost as bad as our Governor! |

Jeff- We try to get to Lake Michigan every day since we've moved so close. Yesterday we tried one of our favorite loops - Lake Mich scenic drive to Sherman W to Beach Drive curve right next to Lake S of Muskegon jetty but the sucker was closed due to drifting snow! Ellen, Comet (new boat dog) and I have several spots to hike the beach in the winter which is awesome - sand and snow swirl up like latte or vanilla carmel ice cream (no camera) and dog loves it. Since I dont have Mt Hood close anymore might as well apply the Patagonias and Arc Terx stuff for new adventures. Let us know when you're around sometime. I will post link to latest Salmon in the Classroom project later. Happy Holidays |
