Every January it seems that some of our more Northerly oriented CW'ers start to get a little edgy, and stir crazy waiting for the spring thaw. Some of them start posting mathematical equations, others their favorite songs, some try their hand at poetry, and others sit huddled in the darkness with a bottle of booze, muttering to themselves. I thought that posting some pics from todays fishing trip might feed the "Whaler Jones" and help y'all through those cold winter nights.

Sunrise this morning on Lake Lanier...

Joe Morgan and me aboard the Jersey Girl...

The lake has risen about 5 feet from near dead low at the beginning of December, these stumps remind me of some sort of crabs trying to return to the water...

Fishing was slow, only landed one fish the whole day (Joe practiced his famous early release method so as to not mess up his boat), and Joe's expression says it all...

The sky was beautiful with the approaching cold front...

Headed home in Joe's 20 foot Outrage, not enough catching, just grateful to be able to go Whalerin'...

The pics are great! Must be something with PC users. I'm on a Mac, and they are beautiful. Although a little chilly...

Great pictures guys, it is still a little too cold for my taste.

Obviously we were fishing and not catching because Kevin had time to take plenty of pics. Fishing has been tough the past 3-4 weeks. But, coming from the north, I consider myself lucky having the luxury of enjoying my Whaler in January with a good friend. One striper is better than none. Tight Lines and Spring is just around the corner.

It is good the water level has come up 5 ft since December.
I also see you are getting more rain. Maybe this spring it
will rebound big time.

The name of the boat got me. Though no actual pictures to verify, I went 45 miles offshore today, first time in 4 or so years. Flat at the dock, smooth in the sound, and nice outside. Stopped about 15 miles out, 40 feet for some bait. Further offshore to 75 feet and began to chop a bit. Shortly thereafter 100 feet and like a lake. Lit a smoke and almost choked the crew. Saw a lot of amazing stuff, ultimately a right whale and two calves. Pictures sucked, and my point of view probably would have been more enjoyed leaving the camera below. Anyway, three great friends, many black sea bass, couple of vermillion snappers, and a couple of trigger fish. Not going to feed all but, all in all, an awesome day! Is it really January 10th? Peace. zotcha.

I have fished in January before and the only thing that I caught in those occasions were a good dose of a chill.
What were you guys targetting?
Did you scan any bait?
Did you get any bounces on the sounder?

Deep?

Zotcha, the name of the boat, "Jersey Girl" is after the Bruce Springsteen song of the same name. Although we live in GA, we will always be Yankees at heart. The wife would love me to get the name on the boat, just haven't done it yet. I do have a burgee with the name on it though.

RitzyRags, we were targeting stripers (Striped Bass) on Lake Lanier. It ended up being a beautiful day although it never really felt like the 60 degrees it warmed up to. The fall and winter months are normally some of the best for stripers. To the sounder questions, Yes & Yes. We did scan bait and fish.

Some one from naw'lins once told me that some of our southern lady cousins thought of themselves as "yankies with hankies".

I thought everyone knew the difference between "Yankees" and "Damn Yankees". Lord knows I've been told. And MORE than once...zot.

Pics look great, you cold weather troopers are my heroes. I haven't been out since October and that was up on Burton. Where are you guys launching? Joe-- did I see Jersey girl turning right from Browns Bridge to head South on McEver? Would have been late afternoon in the last couple weeks.

Dave,
Yes you probably did see my boat up there. For a while I was putting in on the other side of the lake at Charleston. Shoal Creek was a little too shallow for my trailer and East Bank was still closed.
