Would a classic 1984 Montauk fit on a Karavan 1700 trailer that was delivered with a new 2008 150 Montauk?Based on the specs the 1984 is 6' 2" wide vs. 6' 6" for the 150. The classic is fourteen inches longer. Any thoughts?

What's the weight capacity of the Karavan 1700? Can the bunks be adjusted aft and the winch stand forward sufficiently to support the transom?Chuck

Weight capacity of the trailer is 1700lbs. The winch stand could be moved aprox. 5 inches forward. The bunks are adjustable and they currently extend 3 inches behind the 150. I would expect the transom of the 17ft Montauk to overhang the end of the bunk by approx. 6 inches. |

We had our 1987 17' SS LTD (Classic hull) Whaler on the Karavan/Boston Whaler trailer you describe (for new style 150). My opinion - mediocre at best.I thought it would work better than it did, mainly because the 2 boats weight (Classic 17 and new 150) are close to the same. Balance was poor - not enough tongue weight, no matter how you adjusted it. I ended up having to put weight in the bow locker when trailering. And, trailer is too short for our use. May work OK if you use a hoist to launch or use mostly at steep, get deep quick ramps. We ended up selling the trailer and getting a King KB1750 trailer with swing tongue. MUCH better. Perfect fit. In California, you have the option of a Pacific trailer, which, I think, is one of the best boat trailers there is.

I assume that the 1700 pounds is net. If it's gross it's nowhere near close to enough trailer. The consensus here has been that a classic Montauk weighs about 2000 pounds with motor, fuel, and gear. 2000 is greater tha 1700. Chuck

As Frontier pointed out, balance was an issue. I'm pretty sure the axle isn't adjustable fore and aft. The spring shackles are welded in place. In my opinion Karavan trailers are somewhat adequate (I'm being generous)but there are a lot of better trailers out there. For a galvanized trailer I have a Shoreland'r. It is a perfect fit. |

Here's how I figured weight on my Classic 17:Catalog weight of Classic 17 SS LTD (and Montauk) = 900# 90 Yamaha 2-Stroke Outboard = 256# Battery = 50# 24 gallons of gas = 170# Misc. gear = 50# Total weight without trailer = 1426# Trailer weight (King KB1750) = 475# Gross (towed) weight= 1901#
