Time to replace boat covers on both of my Whalers: 1988 Montauk and 1998 13’ Limited Edition. I live near the coast of North Carolina and both boats get full sun in the driveway. I am looking for a good fit and the best durability. Whaler owners experienced requested.

The first cover I purchased was for my Newtauk and it was from Overton's. Since I had lower rails of the Newport, it really didn't fit the way it should have, it was designed for a Montauk. The cover itself was made of Sunbrella and it held up great. Had I had a Montauk, I have no doubt it would have been a good fit.

The second cover I had (and still do have) was for my 17' Outrage. I purchased this one from http://www.boatcoversdirect.com/ and it's held it's own for the last 3-4 years.

Hope this helps...

Dave

The term "boat cover" can mean several things. For some, a tarpaulin is a boat cover. You can often buy semi-fitted mass-made boat covers from retailers like Cabela's and other high-volume catalogue sellers. If you want the cover for when the boat is on a trailer and is stationary, both of these types of covers will work well and won't be expensive. You can generally find something that will fit a Boston Whaler, and, for popular models like the MONTAUK, there are probably are some mass-made covers that will fit quite well.

You can also find custom-made and custom-fitted boat covers for your precise boat and its accessories. Typically these will be locally made. Check any local vendor's work on other boats, especially Boston Whaler boats. Some fabricators do not understand where fasteners can be attached on a Boston Whaler and where they cannot.

The Wm. J. Mills & Co. also make pre-fitted covers for most Boston Whaler boats. They generally are quite well designed and make special use and adaptation of Whaler features.

It is important to note if you plan to tow the boat at highway speeds with the boat cover installed. Some covers are not designed for this, and they will flap and flog themselves and the boat in the air stream of high speed travel. The best covers can tolerate high-speed towing without flapping and beating the gel coat under them.

A good cover will not collect rain water into pools, but will shed it from the cover and boat. Often to accomplish this some tent poles are needed.

Try Carver Industries out of South Carolina:

http://www.carvercovers.com/products/boat_covers/

Click under retailers after you decide the fabric and cover model and part number you want (from under the other tabs). You may find that there are local providers very near you - but don't fret ordering over the internet either, Carver quality is grade A and its customer service is excellent and responsive (customer satisfaction oriented) should you need it.

Also, you mention leaving them in the driveway - do you plan to leave them on a dock or mooring at any time? You may want to consider a fitted one with some type snap or hook-system over a looser fit which may filter down selection of manufacturer. Just food for thought.

Hey junniebugg

Being that you live so close to Belcross, stop in and talk with Rex at Trim's Upholstery. He has been in business for more than 30 years and does fine work at a very reasonable price. He has replaced many seat covers and cushions for me over the years and his work is top notch. He always has something going on in his shop so you can check out his work for yourself. His number is 252-338-3242

Now since you are a fisherman, where are the stripers? Any in Coinjock canal? I live just down the road, north of Grandy. We need to hook up and harvest some fish.
