I could use your help. Tim Ritter is a friend of mine. He is the Executive Director of the US Paddleboard Association (USPBA) Part of his job is to stage the Hennesseys International Paddleboard Championships. http://www.hennesseyspaddleboarding.com/ This year's World Championships will be take place in San Francisco Bay in September, I believe it's on or around the 21st. (Last year the World Chanpionships were staged in Hawaii, the year before that in Australia.) Tim Ritter asked if I knew any Whaler owners in/around SF who would be interested in being Guide Boats for the race, which should last about two hours. All fuel will be paid for and each boat will receive a race entrants goodie bag (which typically has pretty cool stuff in it) and be invited to the race dinner and festivities. Tim said he could use about 10 boats. Does anyone have an interest in doing this? Race day is a lot of fun, I've guided for a number of races over the years. If someone has an interest in taking a lead role, I would like to arrange a conference call with you, Tim and I sometime in the next few weeks to discuss logistics. Or, Tim will be in SF this coming week (4/6) to continue preparations for the race if you have an interest in meeting him. I realize the race is a ways a way, but Tim has been working logistics for about four months and it's important for critical aspects like "Guide Boats" to start coming together Thanks or your interest and your help, John Mirassou

MMM, I can't Google up a word about the event. The exact date would be important, as would be information about the route. There are parts of SF Bay that get real snotty in my Montauk. The absolutely snottiest ride I ever had was from San Leandro north until we got in the lee of Treasure Island. Chuck

Wow Everyone. Thanks for replies. I believe the race will take place the morning of the 26th of September. Tim Ritter picked this date for the slack tide. The race will begin near the Aquarium of the Bay around Angel Island around Alcatraz then back to the Aquarium. I I believe the distance is 10.2 miles. I will speak with Tim upon his return from SF. I'm sure he will be excited to hear about the interest. Here's my e-mail address: johnm@onlyinamerica.biz I count four to five guide boats thus far + another one from an e-mail I received. I will confirm the date and race times ASAP. John |

It sounds like fun. Any excuse to cruise the bay works for me.I have a 23 Outrage that looks like new (after I wax it, that is) and will handle most any conditions the bay can muster. One question though: Why Whalers?

Diveorfish:Why Whalers? Have you read my book . . . :) Actually, I can't think of a better guide boat. If a paddler needs help a Whaler can be at his/her side quickly, at water level, with minimal exhaust or large wakes to interrupt other paddlers. I think being in a Whaler as opposed to, say, a large sportfisher is also a lot more fun for the people in the guide boat as you feel you're really part of the action. Granted, the sportfisher's probably a tad more comfortable and not quite as wet. That, and most Whalers don't have ice makers. |

Hey Jim:The race will begin near the Aquarium located near/in North Beach. I will have the specific race start/finish location, times and dates ASAP. I posted the initial information about the race and request for guide boats to gauge interest. I'm excited and impressed with the response. Tim Ritter, the race organizer, will be back in town, here in Redondo Beach, in the next few days. I will garner, and forward to you, exact information at that time. As of now we have 8 guide boats. And, yes, reading over my reply, I realize I did not answer your question. . . . From Google maps, I believe the Aquarium is somewhere in/near North Beach. Thanks, John |

I think the confusion arises because when San Franciscans think about an aquarium they think about the incredible one which is part of the California Academy of Science, across from the DeYoung museum in Golden Gate Park, several miles inland from the Bay. These southern California lads are probably referring to one of the (forgive me) tacky tourist attractions on Fisherman's Wharf/Pier 39.Anyway, I'm sure the correct starting and ending locations will be provided. Sounds like fun if it ain't blowing like hell, which it does at least half the time in the summer, especially in the afternoon. I'm in. Tony |

You know how us Southern Californians like Cheap, Ratty, Attractions for Pilgrimers. As a matter of fact, I think we coined the acronym (that and our proper english sucks). That being said, we put on a hell-of-a paddling event. Hopefully the paddling gods will take pitty on the racers and their guide boats and provide calm seas for the event. Tim Ritter is still waiting to hear from the National Park Service re: the exact route. This information is due in the next few days/week. As soon as I have all the particulars I will let everyone know. Thanks for the interest, the posts, the e-mails and your patience. John |

Your English sure doesn't suck in your wonderful book, Only in America, John. A great read and a fine adventure! BTW, I'm a southern California lad meself, at least by birth and my first seventeen years growing up surfing, sailing and fishing from the Mexican border up to Point Conception...so no offense ;-)Tony |

there is a slack water period early enough -about 8:30 or so- that morning that there's a good chance of light winds for this short eventJimL |

Yesterday, the National Park Service granted permission to stage the 2009 International Paddleboard Race in the Bay and to start/finish the event in front of Aquatic Park. We have eight confirmed Guide Boats thus far and are looking for one more, nine total. Here are the race particulars: The race will be held on Saturday Sept 26. This date was chosen for the four hour slack tide that morning. The race will start at 8:00am (this is subject to change as there is a swim race from Alcatraz that morning). The race will start in front of Aquatic Park which is next to Fisherman's Wharf, straight down from Ghirardelli Square We ask that guide boats gather in front of Aquatic Park no later than 30 minutes before the race. There are actually two races; A Stand-up Board Race and a Paddleboard Race The Stand Up Board Race course is around Alcatraz and back to the start/finish line. The Paddleboard Race course is clockwise around Angel Island then a 360-degree loop around Alcatraz then to the start/finish line. The fastest Paddleboard time will be around 90 minutes, the slowest racer should end about an hour after that. Conditions at race time could effect these times. The after race party is at McCormick and Kuletos from 1:00pm to 5:00pm and you are all invited to attend the event. Fuel and launch fees will be paid to each boat and a Race Pack (official race shirt and additional items) will be provided to the entire crew on each Guide Boat. There will be dock space available in front of Pearl's Restaurant. How much is still being worked out. More information about dock space will become available as the race approaches. Thanks everyone, John Mirassou johnm@onlyinamerica.biz
