Hi Guys, we plan on watching the Volvo Ocean Race in-shore series when they stop over in Boston. They have setup a Race Village on Fan Pier and it should be great. I am going to tow my 1973 21' Outrage down from Nova Scotia to view the racing and tour about the waterfront. Any advice on a hotel or marina nearby or ideally a combination of the two would be great. This would be May 8th and 9th. Any advice appreciated, many thanks, Sean

Not sure what your budget is, but if you want to stay downtown on the water with your boat, give Boston Yacht Haven a call. It is a new marina located on the end of Commercial Wharf.

Boston hotels are expensive. The room was less than $400 per night, which isn't bad at all considering the location & they are literally on the water. I believe all their guest rooms look out towards the harbor & marina. The location is awesome; it is located in the North End (Italian section) & walking distance to Haymarket, Fanuel Hall & all the cool touristy stuff you would want to see while in town.

They said that the slip for the boat would be $4 per foot per night. This may be an option to leave the boat here & get another hotel if you are looking to save a few $$$.

I just called & they did still have a few rooms available. They said to call fast because they are booking up fast.

If you feel like roughing it, there are a dozen or so islands where you could camp. Cost would be $8 per night, but they have no facilities.

Shoot me an email if you want more information. I can give you directions to a free ramp located in Medford located in a fresh water river where you could leave the truck & trailer. There is a free ramp also located in Winthrop, but it is kind of a pain to get to, and is located in the outer harbor.

If you decide to stay there let me know. I will buy you a beer at the Sailloft.

Good Luck

Larry

Another option is to stay on the water North or South of Boston. Gloucester would be a about 45 mins by boat. Check out Cape Ann Marina. They have slips. There is also a good public launch sites as well if you want a hotel without water access.

Hi Guys, many thanks. I guess my budget is somewhere between $400 and camping for $8. I expect that we will only be in the hotel to sleep so clean and cheap is the order of the day. I can probably book us into Boston Yacht Club up in Marblehead. It only appears to be about 15 nm or so away. Not sure how snotty it gets outside at this time of year. I have seen it very rough out there. Other option is a marina hotel combo up some river or inlet and if the price is nearer the south side of $200 per night, then great. That damn yankee green back has recovered about 20% on the Canadian dollar :-( The idea of leaving the boat downtown at the marina you suggested Larry makes sense. Any other thoughts, I am all ears. And thanks for the beer offer, hope to take you up on it but the beer would be on me, cheers, Sean

Novi,

I have stayed at Boston Yacht Haven, but only in the offseason. Rooms and service are great, and the location cannot be beat.

I wouldn't recommend staying up on the North Shore. If the weather is bad, that is a long miserable ride. I have made the run back from Cape Ann in bad weather, and it is not fun at all. I have a 21 Outrage too; it makes for a real rough ride when the conditions are poor.

I would recommend staying within the inner harbor. Do you belong to a boat club? Some of the marinas will allow you to tie up overnight. There are clubs in East Boston, South Boston & Quincy that may accomodate you. You could grab a cab to a hotel from wherever you leave the boat.

If you want to stay in downtown Boston, Yacht Haven is right in the middle of the action. It is located at the end of Commercial Wharf in the North End, which has a ton of great places to eat & drink. Fanuel Hall, Haymarket & a bunch of other touristy stuff is all walking distance from Commercial Wharf. This is a great part of the city to hang out.

I have a bunch of friends that live in the neighborhood. I believe that there is a real nice B&B off of North Street, which would be a short walk from the boat if you get a spot at Yacht Haven. I will talk to him & find out what the damage is per night.

And I'll take you up on that beer if you stay in the area.
