I'm currently restoring a 1962 13' Boston Whaler. The previous owner had it registered with the Wisconsin DNR, but there was no serial number listed (the interior had been painted over). Well, when I went to register the boat, they assigned me a 12 digit serial number which I am supposed to display in a manner in that it can not be easily removed. Has anyine else run into this and if so, how did you deal with it? Thank you. |

Not for my boat, in Ontario if your boat is built before 1981 they don't care if it has a serial number. For my trailer though because I registered it as a home made trailer (it was a really old trailer that no one could find any paperwork for) they made up a serial number for it and told me I had to display it on the trailer somewhere. At first I was going to get all fancy with it and have a little plate engraved with the number and have that put on the trailer. Once I got the trailer fixed up though I decided I just didn't have the energy so I took a black paint stick and wrote it on the bottom of the tongue where you really don't see it unless you're crawling on the ground under the trailer. |

I have a 16 foot hull, with a metal tag riveted on the portside, outer transom with a # 5478 77L, which I think is 1977 December manufacture date. Is that correct? Also the black stenciled no. inside transom, is 3B2697. I cannot find reference for this number. Anyone can help me with this, I appreciate any help. Thanks. |

Questions about the hull identification number (HIN) or the Boston Whaler stencil number are frequently asked, so we have developed answers for these in the FAQ section. Please read carefully the answer in http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/FAQ/#Q1 and in http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/FAQ/#Q2 There is no known on-line source of a cross reference between HIN and stencil numbers for Boston Whaler boats. There is no known on-line source of information about stencil numbers of Boston Whaler boats made after c.1972. See the FAQ for advice on how to discover information about your boat from its HIN or stencil number. Did I mention that the FAQ provides information on this? There really is not any secret source of information that is not given in the FAQ. If there is some source of information that is not mentioned in the FAQ, it would be greatly appreciated if someone would contact me via email about it and inform me. The entire purpose of this website is to collect information and make it available, and in general all the information we possess is already on-line and available. |

quilcene, Your boat's HIN is probably BWCC5478M77L which indicates it was built in July of 1977 as a 1977 model. You can interpolate from the collected Stenciled Serial Number data presented here: http://whalercentral.com/articles.php?cat_id=7&article_id=17 |

There's a link to that anecdotal information that Joe has collected in the FAQ. It's great if you have a 16-footer. |
