I just received an email from Lee Kavanaugh, Scott's wife. Below is a copy of it. I'm at a loss for words, My wife and I were going to meet up wife Scott and his wife on a trip to Charleston in August.

Hi
I wanted to let you know how much Scott enjoyed the correspondence with another Dauntless owner. I heard all about the Whaler Boards and know he took joy from it.

However, Scott suffered a massive heart attack Wed evening while in the gym and is gone. He was only 47.

My Pili Kai has lost her captain and I my best friend and husband of almost 23 years. Please take your family out on the new boat as much as you possibly can and treasure every moment.

Thanks
Lee, the first mate

Feejer -

Thanks for posting this. I don't believe I knew Scott by his "real" name - what was his CW "handle"?

His family and extended "whaler family" are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dave

How sad.

Lee,

Please accept our deepest sympathy and solace in the fact Scott will be with us in or minds as we are on the water this summer.

Regrads,
Jeff Rohlfing

Dave, to tell you the truth I forget. We emailed each other back and forth about 2 dozen times.

He was another Dauntless 180 owner and really helped me a lot with questions I had about the boat. I miss spoke about Charleston I should have written Savannah.

Very sad and very scary, I'm only a year younger than he was.

was his CW handle

I am very sorry to hear of this.

Life is short, but 47 is simply not fair.

My deepest condolences. I had a friend who recently had a similiar tragedy at the same age. Get your heart checked guys. Have that stress test done before you are 50! This is so preventable, but happens a lot at this age to men. They say to have it done at 50 but IMO, don't wait. This is so sad.

I remember he posted this Video around Christmas last year. It was a gift Lee his wife made for him. The video speaks for itself.

Wow - you're right Jeff. I think that video gives some insight into the richness and love that was shared by the Kavanaugh family.

Rest in peace, Scott.

Take this as a wake up call.

On my 50th birthday, a cardiologist told me that I needed an angiogram. This after about a year being diagnosed with acid reflux by my internist. I needed a stent and the artery was about 90% blocked.

I had another stent put in last July.

My point is, get checked every year and pay attention to aches and pains.

Sorry to hear of the lost,

Warren

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Kavanaugh family.

This really hits home. I justed turned 47, and lost my father to a heart attack 4 years ago. I am considering a comprehensive cardiovascular workup given my family history, even though I consider myself in good health.

I did'nt know Scott or the Kavanaugh family but by the posted video you can tell it was a close-knit family. I feel for the wife and kids in the loss of a father and husband. It really hits home when you think about those kids that won't have fun with Dad anymore. My heart and prayers go out to this family during this time of loss.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Scott. I don't remember a lot of correspondence, but his video stuck with me.

I'm 53 and had warning signs that sent me to getting a stress test last year. It was negetive thank God.

I have family and friends and co-workers that have had open heart surgery, by-passes, and pacemakers installed. They were the lucky ones!

I did not know Scott, except for the movie posted above, but that was enough to know somthing about this family man:)...My sincere condolances to the Kavanaugh family.

I can only echo Lee's words...

"Please take your family out on the new boat as much as you possibly can and treasure every moment".

My dad was 49 when he had his, I was 22. Shared experiences like fishing and boating and their memories were what made the situation bearable, without them I would have been lost.

Life is short, friends. Live well, play hard, treat others well.

Wow. Will pray for him.

And, I will take her advice. That we should live as well as we can, everyday. Can not hear that one enough.

Rest in Peace mipiliki (Scott)

To hear of the death of a fellow boater, a fellow Boston Whaler enthusiast, a fellow participant in this website, a fellow father and family man, is a sad, sad thing, and made more so by the relative youth of Scott (or MYPILIKAI, his boat name), who was only 47 years old.

Whenever any of us brush up against our own mortality, or when we hear of someone like Scott, whose life ended before his time, it makes us appreciate even more each day we are given, each boating adventure we take, each simple day on earth we enjoy.

Bon voyage to you, Scott. We'll all toast to you tonight, we the living, who are reminded of the wonder of each new day by your untimely passing. Here's to you, and to all our Boston Whaler friends gone before!

Jimh said it better than I could, but I share his sentiments. Farewell fellow Whalerman, father and husband.

It's not the shape of eyes and cheeks;
That will be always remembered;
Or that He donned a cap of white whenever;
He felt that's what he really needed.

It's not the choice of his profession;
Or all of this unselfish devotion;
To Family and Friends alike;
That will bring Us together tonight;

It is the fact that all of Us;
In this day of respectful mourning;
Can identify and empathize;
With his place in time and personal doings.

A Family Man;
That will be sorely missed;
By all his Friends and Salts alike;
And to be praised and remembered;
In wording, rhymes and boating stories;
Most often not;
Without any single worries;

In our select and timely conversations;
He will be remembered;
While sitting at rest;
And while sipping brews and feeding wood to the open air fires..
In reliving good times and tribulations;
Of Our friend Scott;
And of his true devotion;
To his Kin,Salts and Friends;
And this;
All the way until the end.

I do present my Respects to his Wife Lee and her children.

I am approximately the same age and have a family with children about the same age. It really hits home thinking about the kids who no longer have Scott as a mentor.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends as well.

In the beginning of the Scott's beautiful slide show that Jeff provides a link to above, Scott told us more about the name of his boat:
quote:

My Pili Kai

These photographs and memories are thanks to time spent on or near My Pili Kai. My Pili Kai is an 18 foot Boston Whaler Dauntless with a Verado 150 engine purchased in 2007.

Named for our favorite body of water far from home, My Pili Kai is perfect for exploring our favorite body of water close to home. In Hawaiian, Pai means to cling or bind and Kai refers to the ocean. My Pili Kai has certainly bound us to a life together on the water.

Kavanaugh family, please know that our hearts go out to you. Through Scott's postings and email communications, and through the photographs Scott has shared with us, we feel that we are part of your extended family. You are kindred spirits.

Lee, a few of us will be taking our Boston Whalers from Charleston to Beaufort and back June 20-21. There will be several youngsters there who are about the age of your son. We would love for you to join us.
